A disappointing whodunnit

The story was not well fleshed out and would've benefited from the author providing more details on brothers and the "heroine", Gabrie I think if more background information had been provided, I might have cared about the characters. As it was, it was a disappointing mystery.

SPOILER ALERT: it aggravated me that Gabrie kept her inheritance fully intending to benefit from it, without any thought of giving it to the brothers. The money was intended to compensate her for what Darren supposedly did to her and her mother. Knowing neither brother did her harm AND keeping the money reeked of greed and selfishness.

Needs more of everything

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I will state at the outset: I dislike cliffhangers. That being said, being able to read all three segments in one "go" was a real plus.

The premise was interesting, but a bit hard to follow at times. I wish there had been more explanation of the connection between Gabrie and Cross Falls (Hampton Falls) from the beginning. The murder of her mother, Lily, is vaguely alluded to, and it isn't developed well enough to become an interesting point to keep in mind as the tale progressed. What motivated Gabrie to go to Hampton Falls? It wasn't made clear, and this ambiguity carried throughout the book. The tale felt thin in many places, and the characters didn't have much depth. The entire book felt as if I was reading a summary of a really good story, instead of being able to fully immerse myself in an engrossing tale. I admit that I did not suspect the perp until just before he tipped his hand.

Though they broke up a long time ago, Gabrie feels something the moment Darren opens the door. He looks better than ever and there's a spark she didn't remember.
Until she finds out she had sex with his twin Jack. And if that's not confusing enough for her, apparently their history is.
Things get worse and Gabriel is forced to face the past and ask some unwanted questions. One of which is who does she really want?

Super Book!

This is a WONDERFUL book, an absolute must if you plan on visiting London with your child. It has a lot of interesting facts in it, that both adult and child can enjoy. Super illustrations too! My 7 year old daughter and I read the book together before going on a trip to London, and we also took the book with us. My daughter had a great time reading the book at night while we were there and enjoyed spotting all the sights mentioned in the book. It really sparked off her interest in seeing the sights and learning about them.

Absolutely wonderful!

My 8 year old daughter checked this book out from the library and we read it together the same night. We both enjoyed it and I asked my husband to read it with her the next night and he thought it was wonderful too. It is both a sweet simple story of a little girl and her mother sightseeing in London along with the most succinct descriptions of London's landmarks. Younger children would probably enjoy the story and one or two landmark descriptions; older children will enjoy the story and the descriptions. I highly recommend this book and will look forward to more of its kind!

A bit disappointing

I read quite a lot about Gironda's course and most information is not contained in this book. What about not mixing carbs and protein, what about short rest intervals, low carbs etc. This book is rather vague. I wonder if Gironda changed his views/opinion on many things regarding training and nutrition in the 1980s because you don't find many of his recommendations in this book.

UPDATE:
The section on ectomorph training is where the book really shines. This chapter shows that Vince Gironda truly knew what he was talking about. Excellent info. Read this! He makes an important point to take the endocrinal system into account when planning workouts (never to failure, variety in both nutrition and exercise). There is so much misinformation out there regarding ectomorph training, which does not make any sense. But Vince really knew his stuff.

Want muscles? Willing to work for it? Get this book.

Then adjust your diet and start lifting....

It sound easy but it is in fact an exploration. No body is the same. Because Vince Gironda's spirit already left his own perfectly proportionally sculpted body a book is what is left to guide you. If you need more advice, then Dave Draper's IOL online forum is a superb place to visit. Some members trained in Vince's gym and you'll have a chance to ask their advice, too.

But mind you, no empty words will do, muscle growth equals action. Read and practice. Nothing else will do. That was Gironda's genius the way I see it, he knew what was needed and what had to be done. Gironda suggested 'the how' of the process. This is a great help on your way to a perfect body.

A perfect body in my opinion is about health, proportions and function. Vince Gironda knew it and he lived that. I'd say, be inspired until you expire. Good luck on your own journey. It's a body building jungle out there This book is a valid map of the tricky body territory. I am glad I've got hold of it (original edition).

Too much of Vince's stuff is out there already

I think this is a great book for bodybuilding enthusiasts who have never heard of Vince Gironda and his methods. Of course if you are a bodybuilding enthusiast, then you should already be familiar with Vince and his methods. A lot of his stuff is out there on the net in bits and pieces, so what I expected from this book was a complete compilation of all of his training techniques, exercises and dietary strategies.

It is NOT a complete compilation of his life's work. The only training program discussed is his famous 8x8. Vince developed a multitude of training programs, and most them are not mentioned in this book.

I will say that the book does show other aspects of Vince's dietary philosophy. Most people are familiar with his dietary recommendations (high fat, low carb), but I was surprised to find other diet plans (such as fasting and vegetarian) in this book.

The greatest strength of this book are the exercises shown for each body part. Vince knew the art of the physique, and he provides a variety of unconventional exercises designed for muscle symmetry and balance.

Overall, an excellent book for the bodybuilder looking to refine his physique.

Good story. DON'T buy it.

This is good, but it contains chapters of a bigger story, which are all in the "Infinity" collection.

Don't buy this. Buy the bigger collection instead. I bought this, then bought the bigger volume since I felt like I was missing a few things, and then gave this one to a friend. Infinity was a big, complicated story, but it was a good purchase, and I'm glad I've got that instead of just this.

Not Bendis's greatest work

I really could have done without the flashback stories where Nick Fury formed an Avengers team that included Sabretooth and Kraven the Hunter back at the end of WWII. Bendis was giving back story to the main plot that involved Luke Cage's team, but that could have been accomplished by using the Howling Commandos or by having a team that wasn't called the Avengers. That just seemed a little annoying to me. And I hated the scene were Namora has a whale jump out of the ocean to squash bad guys. You know what happens to a whale if it's on land? It flops around and dies. Yeah he'll probably squash some bad guys in the process, but he'll squash everything else as well, and that's hardly the most effective way to win a fight.

I probably would have enjoyed this more if Bendis had stuck to the modern Avengers and spent less (or no) time on pointless flashbacks.

A stretch of the series that isn't so special

This second massive collection of Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers finds the series beginning a stretch that was far from the series' best (and would continue until the end of Civil War). Featured in this collection is new member Ronin, recruited by Captain America, whose identity actually turned out to be a bit of a surprise. Also happening in these pages is the revelation of just how Spider-Woman got her powers back, and just who she has been secretly working for. The latter part of this collection bridges events between the aftermath of House of M and sets up the beginning of Civil War, as this also marks the last time that the team is really together as a whole. Suplemental issues are included as well, including an annual and the opening of Giant-Size Spider-Woman, but as I said before, this just isn't the best of New Avengers. There is excellent artwork throughout however from a variety of talent, including David Finch, Mike Deodato, Frank Cho, and more besides, but this is far from Bendis' best work on the series. All in all, if you don't already own any of the single hardcovers or TPB's of New Avengers and want to take on the series, these deluxe editions are worth picking up, especially considering how much better the series does end up getting.

Sobering but helpful marriage advice

No marriage is easy, but some marriages build each partner up, while others tear each partner down; every marriage takes time and effort, but some marriages sap the spouses' strength, while others generate joy and enthusiasm and intimacy, according to Gary Thomas in this book. You are more likely to make a wise marriage choice if you settle the "why" question before considering the "who".

The author's advice includes:

* No matter who you marry, the feelings of romantic attraction are likely to wear off within 12 to 18 months
* If you seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness, you will set yourself up for a more fulfilling, spiritually enriching and more satisfying marriage
* Infatuation leads far more people astray than into satisfying marriages
* While it can seem like a tremendous ego boost to have someone seem like they are desperate for you, ask yourself if you're willing to play the role of God in their life
* The Bible encourages us to use wisdom, not destiny, as our guide when choosing a marital partner
* Important factors to consider include scriptural mandates, wisdom, parental and pastoral advice, and prayer
* If you marry for money, health or looks, keep in mind that none of these are certain to remain
* You're not just choosing a life partner; you're choosing your kids' future parent
* The man or woman you're thinking of marrying should be someone whose character can survive major life challenges
* A relationship requires two people getting to know each other, and then every day they have to choose to keep relating to each other or risk drifting apart
* It takes from 9 to 14 years for two individuals to stop thinking of themselves as individuals and to start thinking of themselves as a couple
* It's hard to accept that we are going to hurt someone we love so much, but if we marry them, we will

The book certainly provides plenty to think about for anyone contemplating marriage. When the requirements of a suitable marriage partner are all added together, the field of potential candidates is seriously narrowed. Most people experience severe struggles in their marriages, and most people are far from being perfect marriage partners, for many of the reasons the author has outlined. It is an eye-opening and sobering, but very helpful, book.

Great Tool for Premarital Counseling

If you don't recall I reviewed Gary Thomas's Every Body Matters and really enjoyed it so I jumped at the opportunity to read The Sacred Search. It also happens that as many of you know I'm writing a book about family discipleship and so I'm trying to read as many books about relationships from a Christian perspective as possible. All that aside: I enjoyed The Sacred Search.

Thomas argues that most people when searching for a spouse are doing it all wrong. They are placing the search above all else. Thomas uses Matthew 6:33 "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (see pp. 17-18). Says Thomas,
I want to make a promise to you: if you will see first God's kingdom and His righteousness and let that agenda drive your decision regarding whom you choose to marry and refuse to compromise on that, you will set yourself up for a much more fulfilling , spiritually enriching, and overall more satisfying marriage. The degree to which you compromise on this verse is the degree to which you put your future satisfaction in jeopardy and open wide the door to great frustration and even regret. (p. 22)
and later he points out,
You know why so many relationships slowly wither into nothingness? They stop seeking first the kingdom of God. There's no overarching mission in the couple's lives beyond self-enjoyment. This entraps them in a life of petty battles and superficial cares. . . . Living by the gospel provides the security so necessary to build a foundation of mutual fellowship (pp. 173, 175)
That foundation provides a spring board for expansive conversations surrounding searching for a marriage partner, pre-marital counseling, healthy relationships, and other related topics. I especially found his discussion on infatuation helpful. He brings in some science and also explains how the body works during this time. It helps to demystify those strong feelings (see chapter 3).

In the spectrum from Biblical counseling (only using the Bible) and modern psychology, Thomas seems somewhere slightly towards the psychology side. What I mean: he grounds his principles in Scripture but he's also strongly affirmative towards the impact of psychology. I'm somewhere slightly towards the Biblical counseling (CCEF) side of the spectrum, although I'm not suspicious of psychology and believe in using truth where ever it can be found. I say all that to say: my one concern with the book was Thomas's chapter on sexual sin and its consequences (chapter 15 "A Neurochemical War Against Your Reasoning"). For all the talk of the kingdom of God and gospel prior I found very little gospel for those who have sinned sexually in this chapter. Instead he points primarily towards "a tremendous amount of spiritual and psychological clinical work" to find healing (p. 198). It's not even that he didn't say overcoming the issue was possible but the language used seemed flippant (like "if you're really messed up" or "if either of you has a past that would make . . . Oprah blush" p. 198) and the emphasis seemed to shift more towards the psychology side. Some who are more affirming in psychology might not find a problem with the emphasis. I would recommend any one who has a history of sexual sin to first lay a good strong foundation of the gospel of Jesus Christ in your life.

Because of the breadth of the topics it would be a good resources for pastors and counselors. He covers almost every important topic to cover before getting married. The book could be used as a guide for pre-marital counseling with some fleshing out by the counselor. Because of the level of practicality I would recommend using this book in conjunction with Tim & Kathy Keller's The Meaning of Marriage. The two books would compliment each other well and would provide a comprehensive resources for newly married, soon-to-be married, and thinking-about-marriage couples.

Good book with some concerns

This is a good book with excellent advice in terns of choosing Godly character above all else in whom your going to marry. But I felt like it was a bit unforgiving for those looking for a spouse that came from frayed past. The book seem to caution even entertaining possibly marrying individuals like that. There are many quality people that have fractured past and have worked hard to develop themselves as quality people and the books doesn't seem to recognize this. I fear that it may present as being hopeless unless you have a had a perfect upbringing and a general past free of problems if you are that type of reader reading this book.
