About the Author
Kari Dunn Buron taught in K-12 with students on the autism spectrum for 30+ years. She developed an Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate program for educators at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and has done volunteer work specific to autism in Trinidad, Tobago, Barbados, Tanzania and Ghana. In 2003, Kari received a Self-designed Bush Leadership Fellowship that allowed her to spend a year interviewing and working internationally with a number of scientists and researchers in the area of Social Cognition, Education and Autism with a focus on challenging behaviors.

How many kids do you know with Attention Deficit Disorder who don't live with anxiety? I know very few. Anxiety and ADD go hand-in-hand for many children, especially in the classroom. The National Association on Mental Illness stated that, "According to a 2008 NIMH-supported study, over 30 percent of children living with ADHD also live with anxiety."

Anxiety in the school setting doesn't help the child with Attention Deficit Disorder. It makes them look unmotivated, since they are anxious about turning in a substandard assignment. Often, they don't turn in assignments and get into trouble. This can lead to absences at school or the child becoming defiant. Anxiety needs to be dealt with for the child to work effectively in school. Starting early can help, since the young child does not have years of anxious failure to work through.

There is a new tool in the fight against anxiety in young children who have psychological differences. Kari Dunn Buron has written and illustrated a book titled When My Worries Get Too Big! A Relaxation Book for Children Who Live with Anxiety. Kari Buron has taught special needs students for more than thirty years and is a member of the Illinois State University Hall of Fame. The book has a Foreword by Brenda Smith Myles, PhD. When My Worries Get Too Big! A Relaxation Book for Children Who Live with Anxiety is designed to teach children to assess their anxiety level and to follow up by self-regulating those anxious feelings.

Using psychoeducation and cognitive behavior management, this book which melds a story book approach with a workbook format, teaches kids how to recognize anxiety. They learn strategies for lowering anxious feelings and returning themselves to a state of relaxation. The book uses a five point scale to assess anxiety. A one is relaxed and feeling good. A five is where the child is feeling like screaming and hitting. There is also a calming sequence and a calming strategy to help the child reduce anxiety and return to a calm state of being.

When My Worries Get Too Big! A Relaxation Book for Children Who Live with Anxiety begins with a child identifying those activities that they are good at. It equates knowing what is going on in their world to the feelings of being at level one or two. The physical symptoms of worry are explored. The child is taught that they can do something about the worry. Worry is not something that needs to escalate to a level five. A child can be in charge of his feelings. The calming sequence is introduced. At each step of the sequence, the child is told how the anxious state is improving. Then, they are prompted to show some personal actions that help them calm down. After that, they list worries. Children list the physical manifestations of the worries at each of the five levels on the five point scale. After that, they fill in their individualized scales and how they can make each level better. The last part of the book lists six evidence based strategies that can help extremely anxious children. A reference section is included.

The strategies from this excellent book can be used in all settings. It can be inconspicuously implemented in a general education classroom, a learning center, or at home. The scale and strategies are easy to use. If you know a child with Attention Deficit Disorder and anxiety, this book may be useful to help that child avoid years of anxiety, academic problems, and social isolation at school!

Overly simplified

This book was overly simplified for my 3 kindergarten and 1st graders. 2 uninspired sentences per page, on level for my 3 yr old preschooler, but not very engaging for any of them. There were not enough examples, and what examples there were, were primarily directed toward kids in public school, and were unrelateable to my homeschoolers (riding the bus, recess, etc). As for the 2 examples given of symptoms of worries: lashing out and stomach aches, mine couldn't relate to these particular symptoms either, and no others were provided them. I had to work harder to get my kids to understand the scale because of these deficiencies. That said, the scales are a handy idea, the notes at the end of the book provided a couple of useful tips, and the relaxation strategies are easy to implement, though again, I'd have liked to see some more examples for the kids given of these as well.

I don't know why the other reviews disparage this book as being "just" a picture book and not particularly useful. What could possibly be more useful than a picture book of fabulous examples of Indian embroidery...the very title of the book???

For heaven's sake, Rosemary Crill is the Senior Curator of The Fabric of India Exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum. I have this and several other of the author's books including:

The first review is valid, if you are looking for a description of techniques, or already know the exact source of the textiles you have acquired, this book is not especially useful. But I sometimes buy pieces that are unidentified or are misidentified, or are not very specifically described - say "Indian" or "South East Asian". Apart from the sheer pleasure of paging through the illustrations, and enjoying this book for the design inspiration it provides it also has helped me to put a name and place to 3 or 4 mystery textiles. As a compendium of Indian embroidery designs it has been the most inclusive that I have run across so far.

But absolutely nothing about techniques. All it is is a large coffee table book with some stunning,. some boring photographs and a brief account on each...Im a little disappointed, but it is pretty, just not useful or practical. If your looking for tecniques, look elsewhere. I have alot of these pieces of clothing (similar) and alredy knew what they looked like & where they were from! Ehh...i wish i could send it back. Another Clever Collection of Wit and Parody

Another brilliant piece of theatre from Stephen Briggs and Terry Pratchett.

The play is based "very loosely" on a certain musical phantom and the opera industry. It is light and easy to read. I haven't tried it on stage but it is one that I would like to try and use. There are just enough characters to make it lively and not a lot of extras are needed. Staging could be very elaborate or very simplistic.

It features the irrepressible Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax as well as Agnes Nitt.

A Fantistic Resource

Like all the O'Reilly hack books, Knoppix Hacks consists of a collection of recipes for carrying out a variety of tasks. The overwhelming majority of the recipes stand on their own, so you can use them without reading the rest of the book.

The Knoppix version 5.1.1 DVD is included with the book. Since Knoppix is a live-boot DVD, arguably the premier live-boot DVD, you don't have to modify your system's hard disk in order to try out most of the ideas in the book. This makes for a great environment for experimentation and learning. You have a sandbox in RAM where you can play with new concepts and commands without messing up your hard disk.

In this reviewer's opinion, Knoppix Hacks 2nd edition is one of the very best computer books available, and belongs in the library of every technically-inclined PC owner.

Full Disclosure: The publisher, O'Reilly, gives many books to Kernel-Panic Linux Users Group for review. I am a founding member of the group and am currently serving as its treasurer. The review copy of Knoppix Hacks went to another member, and I purchased my own copy. A more complete review and errata is available on my website.

Pros:

This book is well-organized, well-written, and has both depth and breadth. It is an excellent resource for learning Linux. Although many of the recipes cover advanced topics, they are relatively easy to follow in part because they start with the system in a known state -- booted from the included Knoppix DVD.

Knoppix Hacks covers everything from familiarizing you with the KDE desktop, to mastering your own customized Knoppix DVD. Two examples: Do you want to learn the basics of Linux system administration? Read Chapter 5, "Put Knoppix in Your Toolbox". Do you want to use free software for Windows system administration -- possibly saving hundreds of dollars? Read Chapter 7, "Rescue Windows".

There are a lot more pros I could list, but you get the idea.

I found a few cons, but they are very minor:

The included version of Knoppix is not suitable for really old PCs that lack DVD drives. But, the text explains how to download and burn your on copy of the Knoppix CD version.

On the copyright page, my copy shows a printing date of November 2007 and a copyright date of 2008 -- that seems odd.

The book contains a few terms and phrases that the editor probably should have changed. In the in forward they say some "forged new ground" instead of "broke new ground". They talk of "MD5sum" rather than "md5sum", the command, or "MD5 sum", the algorithm.

Pleasantly Surprised

I had heard that Knoppix would allow the installation of OS' without the need to leave the parent process -- something I couldn't figure out. I browsed this book and saw the many intriguing options Knoppix had to offer. After buying (at full retail) I immediately tried the options.

I was able to get my Nvidia card synced up to my SyncMaster at 1680x1050 with depth of 24...AND...it is persistent. For that alone, the book paid for itself.

At the moment, I'm finding, with the help of this book, that Knoppix may be the do-all system I've been searching for. Currently, I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 and LinuxMint. What I want is a thin streamlined Linux and I think I've found it with the help of this book.

BTW, some of the files pointed to in the book do not exists but can be found on the net.

Great Knoppix Resource

Knoppix is an outstanding programming achievement, allowing users to boot Linux from CD/DVD without installation (WITHOUT installation?!?). Also contained in the Knoppix package is a whole slew of open source tools and other favorite goodies that any Linux programmer might want to use and learn from. Knoppix has so many tasties and fun stuff present that content wasn't the problem, instead navigating through all this had to offer was the only issue. With 'Knoppix Hacks: Tips and Tools for Using the Linux Live CD to Hack, Repair, and Enjoy Your PC' those days of navigating through Knoppix have come to an end. Jam packed with 120 tips and tricks of the trade, you will learn it all. From basic administration to desktop tweaks to file I/O work to playing with Windows, it's all here. If you are a Linux lover that wants to learn what Knoppix can do for you or you simply are a weekend computer warrior that wants to take it to the next level, this is a great guide, written in the classic spirit of past 'Hacks' books by O'Reilly.

Even today there is still debate about the effectiveness of her extreme strategies, but her work is recognized as a crucial element in achieving women's suffrage in Britain. Her mantle was taken up by her daughters and granddaughter with her legacy still very much alive today.

Great manuscript!

I never expected to get the actual manuscript, corrections,remarks and all, when I bought this book. It's a copy of the original manuscript, warts and all. It's really good reading. Gives a true insight as to what she had to actually go through to help get women the vote.

fascinating!

Absorbing contemporary account of the militant arm of the women's suffrage movement in Great Britain. This book reads easily and held my interest throughout. I had to look up some of the references to people and events but did not feel that detracted from my experience of reading this book. I found my sympathetic reaction to Mrs. Pankhurst's justifications for advocating property damage disturbing as I am normally opposed to violence as a means of political expression. I was relieved to read that the group took pains to avoid injuring people. I hope that is true although I am sure that unintended injuries must have resulted from some of their activities. Overall, I got to learn some history, a window into Mrs. Pankhurst's views, experiences and values and a sense of what it felt like to live in that time. I was also challenged to look at my own values. The Kindle edition that I read was free so the only cost to me was time: a very worthwhile investment.
