This adaptation is based on the timeless swashbuckler by Alexandre Dumas, a tale of heroism, treachery, close escapes and above all, honor. The story, set in 1625, begins with d'Artagnan who sets off for Paris in search of adventure. Along with d'Artagnan goes Sabine, his sister, the quintessential tomboy. Sent with d'Artagnan to attend a convent school in Paris, she poses as a young man - d'Artagnan's servant - and quickly becomes entangled in her brother's adventures. Soon after reaching Paris, d'Artagnan encounters the greatest heroes of the day, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, the famous musketeers, and he joins forces with his heroes to defend the honor of the Queen of France. In so doing, he finds himself in opposition to the most dangerous man in Europe, Cardinal Richelieu. Even more deadly is the infamous Countess de Winter, known as Milady, who will stop at nothing to revenge herself on d'Artagnan - and Sabine - for their meddlesome behavior. Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was one of the literary lights of France during the Romantic Revolution, his complete works eventually filling over three hundred volumes. Ludwig Strikes Again

This adaptation of The Three Musketeers by Ken Ludwig is great. There's so much of Ludwig's clear comic style in the script and it's a fantastic read. My local theatre group recently did a sit down read through of the entire play and other than a couple (mostly from a stage blocking standpoint) hiccups, it's something that we all wanted to perform immediately. So we are! It's going to be part of our 2012-2013 season.
Ludwig is a fantastic writer. I was fortunate enough to be in Moon Over Buffalo recently which is also a fantastic Ludwig play (that also incorporates some fencing oddly enough). There are a couple odd things in this version though; there's an "montage" at the beginning of Act II to catch the audience up on what's been happening (though I'm sure that all works itself out on stage).
The characters are fun, the original story is well represented, and the Duke of Buckingham...well, he's "The Duke of Buckingham!"
UPDATE: Just wanted to post a quick update to say that our production was a success and everyone seemed to really enjoy the show. The few complaints I had were from people that didn't like the alterations to the original content (the biggest one being the addition of Sabine...d'Artagnan's sister), but other than that we had children playing in the lobby during intermission and after the show with small fake swords who loved the show!
I ended up directing the production and my cast/crew also sent a copy of the poster for our show to Ludwig and he sent it back signed as my memento!

All for one and one for Her

Last night I caught a production Ken Ludwig's adaptation of "The Three Musketeers" at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and I have to be honest I was a bit let down by it. My disappointment has little to do with the actors, the direction or the stage presentation. Its Ludwig's adaptation of the classic story that is the let down.
Going into the theater I had little hope that this would be a straight presentation of Dumas' adventure. There have been so many retelling of the story that I believe every new adaptor feels that they have to take a new approach to the material. This attitude and what I feel is Ludwig's misunderstanding of Dumas' work ultimately sinks this version.
Ludwig in his Playbill notes states that original work is just a "series of adventures" that run one after another without being connected reducing it to a "comic book" story. He also claims that the characters are all "good or bad" and don't grow throughout the story. Ludwig could not be more wrong on both parts. Remember d'Artagnan is involved with a married woman throughout the story and I have always believed that Constance's fate was always determined by her betrayal of her marriage vows. The heroes are all engaged in saving the reputation of the Queen of France who is actually guilty of all the crimes against France that the Cardinal is accussing her. Even the Cardinal is no villian in the true sense of the term. The only real villian in the original story is Milady de Winter but with her back story who can really condemn her. These are complex/very flawed charactors - not comic book heroes and villians. But in Ludwig's hands that is the level he reduces them.
Sure I knew Ludwig is doing a comedy but for me his humor just doesn't work. The biggest problem with Ludwig's appoarch is his addition to the story of d'Artagnan's younger sister. Ludwig claims that she is there to tie the entire adventure into a singular whole but in truth this character is so out of place in this story that she serves only as a distraction. She is literally allowed to steal from d'Artagnan and the Musketeers their role as the heroes of the story due to Ludwig's decision to allow her the role her of the person that does away with one of the main villians in the story.
Going into this production I so much wanted to love it but in the end I could not. Sure there are several laughs in the peice but the best ones are taken directly from Dumas' original work. Ludwig's work in the end is little more that a failed attempt to improve on a work that did not need any improvements.

Disappointing. Weak added Female.

Well crap. I had heard he'd added a female character. Oh goody. But no, while yes, he's added a female character, she is one of the most insulting and uncomfortable female characters I've read in this year's search for next year's season closer. She is supposed to be 15 or 16, and spends the play seemingly trying to seduce one of the older Musketeers. When not trying to do Aramis, she is in the way. She doesn't take up a sword or do anything intelligent or noble, but rather gives the big strong guys with blades another damsel in minor distress. Oh, and the humor is weaker than any of Ludwig's other work. Got the distinct feeling his heart was never in this one. the best scene is the opening. The rest is ... Too bad. And yuk. Did we really need another weak, sex-driven female character in a contemporary action play?
