A creative genius at his profession often has a tattered personal life. Likewise, a great man is supposedly never a hero to his family. Erickson, the "father" of medical hypnosis, seems to have been an exception to both rules. In this warmly affectionate tribute by family and friends, he stands out as a man who used his own experience as the conscious inspiration for many of his professional coups. For example, shortly after being stricken with polio as a teenager, he undertook a two-month-long recuperative canoe trip. His journal of the trip reveals a person who believed that healing comes from within. This person would later become founding president of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and set trends in tapping the curative power of the mind. Chockablock with Erickson's humor, personal notes, and family photographs, as well as a transcript of a clinical consultation, this book is more memoir-cum-scrapbook than biography, which the unconventional psychotherapist well might have relished. About the Author
Betty Alice Erickson, MS, is a licensed professional counselor, a marriage and family therapist in private practice, and an international teacher of Ericksonian psychotherapy and hypnosis. Bradford Keeney, PhD, is the former director of several family therapy doctoral programs. He is the author of Aesthetics of Change, Improvisational Therapy, and Mind in Therapy, and the editor of the Profiles of Healing series.

Enjoyed the book. Milton was my cousin and his daughter Betty edited the book with various members of the family contributing to the contents. The index provides the names of the contributors and photos of all the family is included in the book. The audio disc supplied with the book which was supposed to be used in conjunction with passages of counseling referenced in certain chapters was faulty and unusable and is no longer available. Overall it is an interesting topic for anyone interested in psychology and the workings of the human mind. His daughter Betty continues on, internationally, teaching the method that Milton developed.

The first "biography" of this incredible and paradigm changing man. Touching and true, fascinating and filled with facts. Has his legendary "canoe diary" in it as a bonus. DVD is old and hard to understand, but a transcript is thoughtfully included.

Very good book

Great insights into the life of a wonderful person. Lot of things to get inspired by. Get to know the man behind the persona that it's (overly) portrayed in the specialty literature. Take your time when reading it, so to pay attention to the details. Get to see how close friends are seeing him.
