programmes, Space Operas...it's a genre that's always called to the inner geek in me, and since getting hooked on gay romance I've especially enjoyed books set in this particular sub genre. DC Juris is a new author to me but Broken Alpha's "Read me!" blurb spoke loudly, and after finishing it I'm definitely going be searching out more from this author.
There was a lot I enjoyed about this intriguing Sci Fi novella. DC Juris writing flows easily and I connected with his style and vision immediately. He creates a lovely sense of camaraderie and true friendship around his two space Alpha's; Presidian Captain Korden Encarit and the reptilian ships healer, Sokel, who is mated to his spunky human Omega, Sebastian. Three likeable characters whose love and support of Rennet add a lot of heart to the story. Poor Rennet definitely pulled my heartstrings!
A great premise, I liked the hurt/comfort side of the story, as it delivered some heart felt, dramatic and poignant interactions between Alpha space Captain Korden and his 'Broken Alpha' brother Rennet; two men whose taboo relationship drove the books emotional content.
However because it's a novella rather than a full length novel, as I read on there were times when personally I felt it suffered slightly from length constriction. Its world building was clever but is told more than shown, affecting certain aspects of its key plot moments. Sometimes a little abrupt in its plot progression. I would have loved to have those parts of the story fleshed out more, Rennets terrifying ordeal and rescue especially. I was expecting a touch more action and excitement but mostly it was left to the imagination in order to push on to the more emotional dynamics of the two brothers taboo relationship, which of course is the main focus of the story. I sort of missed not seeing Rennets side as it sounded like it would have been quite an exciting segment.
For a fairly long stretch of the novella,there was actully very little descriptive sex which I didn't really miss because it suited the tone of the story at that stage. When the long awaited love scene did arrive it was quite a long explicit scene that—because of the dominant Alpha and submissive Omega traits— wasn't BDSM per se but it did have a srong sadomasochistic element. It was crucial to Rennets state of mind and pretty hot stuff but because of the lack of sexual action and description in the first two thirds of the novella, the jump into intense, explicit erotica did feel a bit like I was suddenly reading a different book. Not that I'm complaining really...*cough*...but it was slightly unexpected.
Overall though, I can't deny this was a pretty engaging read. One that kept me intrigued and heralds a good start to a series I'm looking forward to following up.

An okay read....different

3 space stars!! This book was different, but in a good way!
I don’t normally read this genre, but I’m glad I did! It started off a bit slow for me, but it picked up after a few chapters and then I was hooked! I loved the characters and the development of them. Again, this is not a genre that I normally read, but I really got into this one! I like the start to this series, and I’m excited to see where it’s going next!
