Dr. Winkler is a Board Certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Physician in private practice in Springfield, Missouri. In his practice, Dr. Winkler specializes in traumatic and acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputations, and life care planning. He holds academic appointments as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and Clinical Professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition, Dr. Winkler serves on committees that review grants on spinal cord injury research for the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. He has several publications in the area of life care planning.

About the Author
Robert W. Strayer (PhD, University of Wisconsin) taught African, Soviet, and world history for many years at SUNY College at Brockport, where he received Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and for Excellence in Scholarship. In 1998 he was visiting professor of world and Soviet history at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since 2002, he has taught world history at the University of California, Santa Cruz; California State University, Monterey Bay; and Cabrillo College. His scholarship includes work in African history (Kenya: Focus on Nationalism, 1975; The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa, 1978); Soviet history (Why Did the Soviet Union Collapse?,1998;� The Communist Experiment, 2007) and World History (The Making of the Modern World, 1988, 1995; Ways of the World, 2009, 2011). He is a long-time member of the World History Association and served on its Executive Committee.

Valuable Text In New Edition

This is a very serviceable survey for the early eras of world history. Unlike multi-authored texts---e.g. with 4 authors, 6 editions and scant literary merit---Robert Strayer presents a unified perspective in engaging, readable style. The illustrations, maps and supporting material are excellent. While the philosophy is rather liberal, Strayer is well-balanced in presenting a range of views. He is more interested in discerning key developments and patterns of change rather than piling on details (thus "brief history"), but there's enough data to illustrate the major issues. Unlike many textbooks, women's history, especially the women's movement, receive proper attention. It's also among the most affordable world history surveys. One drawback is the lack of extensive primary source excerpts, but teachers can easily remedy this deficiency with other assignments. A good supplement is E Gilbert & J Reynolds, "Trading Tastes," also reasonably priced compared to most source collections. Strayer's works have quickly become my favorites for world history courses.

Sampling (the removal of a small amount of material from a larger volume to test it for a desired characteristic) is important to industry in order to monitor the progress of a reaction or the quality (purity) of a product. To ensure that the sample is representative of the larger volume, certain procedures need to be followed in removing the sample and statistical interpretation of the data. An example of sampling would be determining the purity of a train boxcar load of fine clay by several small samples representative of the bulk. Pierre Gy is one of the leading sampling experts in the world and Sampling for Analytical Purposes is an abridged version of his previous French works. Both of his books are usually purchased together. I have used this industrially, great for analytical and quality control. At times, depending on the amount of bulk product, it becomes necessary to make a series of measurements on a batch to truly arrive at a value that can be trusted. This shows you how to get good data for bulk and mass production samples.

Marjorie M. Liu is a New York Times best-selling author of paranormal romance and urban fantasy novels and comic books. Her novels include the 2005 paranormal romance Tiger Eye. Her comics work includes a number Marvel Comics series related to the X-Men and Wolverine, including NYX, X-23 and Dark Wolverine. She currently resides in the American Midwest.

Mike Perkins is a British comic book artist known for both his inking work and full art duties on comic books such as Captain America, Ruse and Stephen King's The Stand.

Love Northstar

I love Northstar, so reading a book where he gets married is wonderful. The main storyline is great, and although the art is not my favorite (Northstar looks awful in some panels), it is great to see him and Kyle. I liked the writing as well. One thing that felt rushed was how Kyle/Northstar hooks up after Kyle declines his offer. Seemed kind of rushed.

There are two stories also included, one a sort of romantic short between Kyle and Northstar which is adorable, and a second a sort of ham-fisted consciousness-raising story about AIDS which had a very dated feel. I realize this issue is an important one, however, I personally would've preferred another Kyle/Northstar story.

I am taking off a star because of the art. Northstar- the protagonist- is not very attractive, and he is suppoed to be a good looking man. He is drawn inconsistantly, often looking rather fat, othertimes unrecognizable.

At the center of the issues collected here is the marriage between Northstar and his boyfriend Kyle. Just as the X-Men pushed readers nearly 50 years ago to accept an international and multiracial group of superheroes (and in doing so perhaps question the xenophobic and racist tendencies in America), the X-Men today ask readers to take part in a gay wedding (and in so doing perhaps question some of the culture wars raging about the topic today). Bravo X-Men! Bravo Marvel!

Writer Marjorie Liu handles Jean Paul and Kyle's relationship with expert touches. It is a very real relationship with its problems and its joys. Moreover Liu establishes the wedding without too much concern for the wedding's incredible importance in connection with modern politics. The two men love each other, it's natural they want to be married. Wolverine and the X-Men are Northstar's friends, so they are of course happy to attend the ceremony. Liu only allows a few small nods to acknowledge the marriage's controversial nature. Very well done!

Not to worry, this is not simply a wedding episode. There is a fight with the Marauders. An evil corporation seems to be scheming in the background. And something very not right is going on with Karma.

Artist Mike Perkins creates many beautiful panels, particularly the lavish attention to the details of the New York City background. Perkins full-page panels are perfect.

The bonus materials are also good. The excerpt from Nation X #2 (if crudely drawn) offers readers a glimpse into the difficulties of long-distance dating an X-Man. The Alpha Flught issue contains the episode when Northstar publicly became a homosexual superhero.

X fans will want to read this issue. Everyone who espouses a desire to see a more tolerant society will want to read this issue. I believe this issue will be as culturally significant for the X-Men as X-Men were 50 years ago when they had a Russian team mate during the cold war and had an African teammate when the country was still grappling with integrating schools.

Marvel's First Gay Marriage!

This story follows the marriage between Northstar and Kyle. Something that many Marvel fans have been waiting for. The story and artwork is great. The book also includes Alpha Flight #106 the issue where Northstar publicly announces he is gay. This book is a must have for any gay fan of comics and fans of the X-Men or Northstar. Don't miss out on this piece of history.

I enjoyed this book and I think it is mostly still true

I had to go back and look at the copyright date because this could be America 2016. I assume the negative reviews are from people who don't like the way their town was portrayed. I don't think the author's judgement is harsh. It is accurate: America isn't perfect. This book portrays it, good and bad. And very funny in parts. The only shock is how prices have changed - and Bill thought prices were bad at the time! Five stars, yes.
