A Must read for the serious painter

If you are a serious painter, you need to know two basic things....how to put paint on paper and where to put paint on paper. A lot of books will teach you the former. No book will teach the latter better than Edgar Whitney's. And if you don't master design (where to put the paint) it doesn't matter how well you put it on paper or canvas(technique). Whitney said of the 7 elements and 8 principles of design " For lack of understanding of 15 words you will occasionally produce a good painting but will not be capable of evaluating why". This book is not for looking at the pretty pictures. It's a book to be studied and to learn from. If you do, you'll be glad you did.

This book was recommended by Tony Couch in his book, "Keys to Successful Painting". I find the material in Whitney's book to be the basis for Tony's book. They are both devoted to the principles of design, and the elements of design. Whitney's book has a more in depth approach and gives reasons why things work and some don't. I have read the book and find the information useful. A must read for those who want to beter understand the elements and principles of what makes a good painting eye catching and memorable.

About the Author

Charles E. Dibble (1909-2002) was an anthropologist, linguist, and scholar specializing in Mesoamerican cultures. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees from the Universidad Nacional Autónomo de México and taught at the University of Utah from 1939-1978, where he became a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology.

Arthur J. O. Anderson (1907-1996) was an anthropologist specializing in Aztec culture and language. He received his MA from Claremont College and his PhD in anthropology from the University of Southern California. He was a curator of history and director of publications at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe and taught at a number of institutions, including San Diego State University, from which he retired.

For their work on the Florentine Codex, both Dibble and Anderson received the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest honor of the Mexican government; from the King of Spain the received the Order of Isabella the Catholic (Orden de Isabel la Católica) and the title of Commander (Comendador).

Here is another example of why only two and not the third (True Colors) included in this hardcover book? Why isn't there a way to know this is coming so that an individual who wants to collect these books can get them in hardcover or know that paperback is the only way????? I think it is a way for publishers to make extra money and no, I don't think it is very funny. As for both books they are very good to read, but would have been better if they would have included number 3 (True Colors). The book arrived faster than I thought and in excellent condition and for that I am happy, but not for buying three paperbacks and then find it in hard cover and then not even including number 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im sure this hardcover copy is great. I bought the order 66/true colors duo and it was great. I had already purchased them all in paperback but wanted hardback copies. I havent purchased the hard contact/triple zero edition yet but im sure its just as good. For the other review the reason this only came with 2 books was so that they could pair the other 2 together. Great books. Want to buy all of them.

These stories are amazing! If you like Star Wars you will like reading this collection. This book combines the first two books in what I believe is a 4 book set for Republic Commando. This collection is very hard to find in Hardback! Hardbacks were only available for a limited time. The quality is excellent. If you can get your hands on this collection it is worth it.

I found this book when it was only available online. I'm glad to see that it is in print so I could get one of the first copies of this book, as I am sure that it will be famous. This is one of my favorite books that I have ever read. This is one of the most interesting theories like this that I have heard of in a while. I have been aware of the historical existence of giants, had no idea of their importance. This book is very easy to read and understand. Everything in the book is explained and has references. It is like an encyclopedia. I don't find any parts of the book offensive. It makes more sense than aliens helping mankind build pyramids, etc. The theory in this book fills in a lot of gaps in a lot of history.
