About the Author
Gregory S. Rohrer is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Prof. Rohrer was born in Lancaster, PA, in 1962. He received his bachelor's degree in Physics from Franklin and Marshall College in 1984 and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. At CMU, Prof. Rohrer is the director of the NSF sponsored Materials Research Science and Engineering Center. His research is directed toward understanding how the properties of surfaces and internal interfaces are influenced by their geometric and crystallographic structure, their stoichiometry, and their defect structure. Prof. Rohrer is an associate Editor for the Journal of the American Ceramic Society and his research earned a National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award in 1994.

Excellent book

Great source of information for bonding. I used it in a graduate introductory materails science class and found the chapters on bonding to be very helpful in understanding the concepts. Did not look too much into crystal structures.

Surprisingly useful and good book! I have low expectations of books that look like this, and of college 2nd year textbooks (After you stop using the pretty ones that were also used in high school AP classes). This book is not in color, but I love the organization and the simple yet detailed explanations. It has an index which is awesome. I love reading this textbook. (compared to the x-ray diffraction by cullity textbook that is also required for my Materials Science class on Atomic Structure). Everything is written in an understandable way. I suck at chemistry and haven't taken it for 2years but this book was great for me.

Great back-up if you know some statistics

I understand basic statistics and some of the more specialised areas like design of experiments and quality techniques pretty well. This volume has proved invaluable when trying to understand those areas I'm not familiar with such as PLS and non-parametric statistics. It provides well-written overviews of topics plus back-up theory for those who need to appreciate the mathematics in more detail. A powerful aid to understanding when using a propritary statistics package.

Good book in print.

I was first exposed to this text with the free web book put out by the publisher. It is great and easy to read with lots of links to look things up if you get a little lost. I would not use to learn statistics for the first time but it is a quick reference for people who need just a refresher from time to time.

I use the online version a lot so i knew I wanted to have print version as a desk reference when I can not get online. I was expecting this book to be good but honestly I expected the online to print transformation to lead to some weird layouts and gaps. Honestly that is not the case. The book is well formatted for print with good graphics for the type of book it is.

Alexander S. White is an attorney, writer, and amateur photographer. He is the co-author of David Busch's Canon PowerShot G10/G11 Guide to Digital Photography, and author of PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDE TO THE LEICA D-LUX 4: GETTING THE MOST FROM LEICA'S COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA and DAUNTLESS MARINE: JOSEPH SAILER JR., DIVE-BOMBING ACE OF GUADALCANAL. He began his life-long interest in photography as a teenager, when he was fortunate enough to have his own darkroom in his parents' house in Philadelphia. David Busch's Sony Alpha DSLR-A550/A500 Guide to Digital Photography

I am a new to digital user. My last camera was a Minolta Maxxum 5000i, which I have owned of about 35/40 years. One reason I purchase the new Sony was because my other two Minolta lens would work on the new Sony aDSLR-500 body, thinking I would be saving money. And they did work, but they were 40 years behind the digital technology. Santa did bring me a new lens for Christmas, and all is well. I never did learn how to manually use my old camera, so I am starting out from scratch. I have not read this book from cover to cover yet, but so far it has been a great experience. The illustrations are clear and easy to see, and do. David goes through it all, step by step in plain, easy to understand language. I have a series of three other `How to shoot great photos" books that are very good, but the author spent too much time trying to add humor. I like a straight forward, get it done, and let me go shoot some photos type of reading. This book does just that. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a Sony camera, and I would think his other books would be as good.

Having progressed from a Canon film SLR camera, to a Sony digital camera
when they were first introduced, to the Sony A550 I know from a cursory
read of the manual I needed much more to learn how to use this camera to
its full advantages. David Busch's book fits the bill perfectly!!

It explains the features, menus, and scene modes and breaks them down in
easily digestible bites that are fun to read. It is very informative without taking the reader into realms of information overkill that is often done with some manuals.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that owns either camera, or
someone that just wants to take better digital pictures. Great job David!

The is the second book I have bought from David Busch.

This is the second book I have bought by David Busch. The first was on the Sony a350. Both books have really explained the camera in a much more readable and understandable way than the manuals do.
The information in both books is something that can be used for most all cameras because it goes into Digital photography in an in-depth level that is easy to understand.
