Not just for beginners -- veterans have learned from Fowler for years

I had the great good fortune of studying with scholar and poet Alastair Fowler, and of experiencing this book when he offered aspects of it as a talk for graduate students. As soon as I learned it was a book I bought it. His insights are fresh and energizing, and he truly inspires one to write and to feel confident about it. Someone here suggested it's only for beginners, but I think that's balderdash (and I write for a living). Dr. Fowler's use of language may be (perhaps deceptively) clear, but his ideas have underpinned many a successful doctoral dissertation and well-written scholarly book.

This tiny little book is extremely helpful, even for experienced writers. It covers topics including the writing process, style, research, and practicalities, such as diction.

One of my English professors had us read through this book. I found it well suited to educational use and I still have it a year later because it's just as good for personal use.

A must read series

Having been a fan of this series since I read the first book, I couldn’t wait for this one to be released. This series is one that is full of action, suspense, left me on the edge of my seat wondering what twists and turns Borino was going to take us on in this series.

I would say that to be able to fully grasp what is happening in this book, you do need to read the previous books. While Borino does give information covering the previous books, but to fully understand what is going on, you need to read the others.

But anyway, back to this book, I loved what Borino did with bringing the characters from the Angel’s Intuition series into it. And no, you don’t need to read that book before reading this one, if anything it will make you want to read that book after you finish this one. But for die-hard fans like myself, it was great to catch up with them and see how they were doing.

There is a lot of characters that are mentioned and have active roles in the book, but I really do believe that it doesn’t overload the book. All the characters are needed, for various reasons.

The drama and suspense that happens to Rhett and Kayden was just great! It really kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. The pages couldn’t turn quick enough. Considering everything that they have been through, I do think that this is a great conclusion to their story. But, with that in mind, I do also hope that Borino will continue to share updates on this couple in the future.

I would say that if you’re looking for a great new series to start that will hook you in and keep you wanting for more, then you should really give this one a shot!

Another of Tokyo Pop's OEL(original English language)manga titles that was meant to be an ongoing series of graphic novels which only lasted one volume, Tantric Stripfigher Trina was one of TP's numerous attempts to try and reach the older teen demographic with some seriously overdone fanservice. This was written by former fanzine creator Ken Faggio, and drawn by Fernando Furukawa who went on to work on the Starcraft manga and some Garth Ennis titles.

Trina is the sole survivor of a clan of female warriors on the planet Rama which was destroyed by a mercenary. She now uses her seductive skills as a dancing fighter to become a bounty hunter to track down those responsible for her world's destruction. She gets the female Cloud Strife lookalike, Abbey, as her new prot�g�, who secretly has a crush on her. Trina is also on the run from the ruling class called the Cog and Crown, which it is later revealed was behind her planet getting the finger. Trina takes on the master mercenary Curse and his bikini-clad hit-girl squad, which leads her to the martial arts master Terse who lead the attack on her home. Although their climatic fight is interrupted by an inquisitor from the Cog. Trina combines with Abbey in a world DBZ fusion to form a four-armed goddess to defeat him. They then set out to take down the corrupt royalty.

This was a fair manga, but was borderline ecchi on way too many occasions. There's some intense fighting scenes though, and should attract the attention of your average raving horny otaku.

I bought this book because I enjoy the artist's work on Spinnerette and I must say I enjoyed this book as well.

The story follows the adventures of a martial artist looking to get revenge on the ones who wiped out her race along with help from a robot and a morally questionable cyborg while a large mysterious figure tracks them through the galaxy.

The story is heavily anime themed and is very risqu�, but I still enjoyed every second of it and I'm currently keeping my eyes open for the second volume.

If you enjoy Spinnerette and animes like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, then this is something that you should definitely consider checking out.

The best GNR book not written by a band member

This book is an essential must-read for anyone who is a fan of Guns N' Roses.

At first I was highly sceptical, there have been some truly terrible books written about this band in the past, but this one proved to be the exception to the rule.

The book is 348 pages long, excellent quality and every page has something of interest to GNR fans, either pictures or stories about the bands formation, or both. Much of it you will not find anywhere else, either online, on TV or in other books (in some cases including Slash's autobiography). Like most GNR books it claims to have stories and interview sections with friends of the band, but unlike most GNR books the people interviewed here really did know the band, and in many cases still do. Many of them played with one or more band members as they were starting out, others were friends throughout the bands formative years. There are none of the typical dodgy interviews with someone who lived down the street from Axl for a month, or went to Slash's high school just 1 year after he left, it's all the real deal.
It also includes a lot of information from the band members themselves, some of it contributed specially for the book.

And the pictures are all up to the same high standard as the text. No fuzzy re-prints of magazine shots, nothing stolen from websites or videos, it's all excellent quality and predominantly from the personal collections of the same friends and band mates who contributed the text.

As if that's not enough the book also includes a code that gives you access to audio and video recordings and more photos via a website. Again it's all great quality and stuff you're extremely unlikely to have seen before.

In short this is the sort of book that most band biographers wish they could have written and a must have for all GNR fans. It's just a shame so many other people got there first and did such a bad job of it.

Very cool book

Any GN'R fan should own this book. Tons of pictures tell the story of the rise of a great band who made, in my humble opinion, the best rock record of all time. Too bad they couldn't hold it together, but if you read Slash's book you can understand why. Reckless Road is a nice companion to that book.

If there's one thing that could have been improved with this project, it would be spelling. Countless times it says "here" when it should be "hear," or "then" instead of "than." Sort of annoying, but the pictures are really what it's all about. And most of these pictures are truly worth a thousand words, so they more than make up for the typos.

Great book and I would highly recommend it.

Excellent book, but don't forget... IT IS ENHANCED!

I picked up this book a few weeks back and loved it. I did time in Hollywood around that time and seeing familiar faces telling the story was quite fun. Canter did an AMAZING job documenting his friend Saul's band...

BUT do not forget, this book is ENHANCED! I did it today and it was fabulous... Buy the book, get your password, go to the website and viola! You can read every page and as you do see video interviews with Slash, Duff, Adler and all of the inner circle... PLUS as you read about all of the first shows you get to HEAR the actual performances! Read about the first time "Jungle" or "Rocket Queen" or "Nighttrain" was performed AND you get to hear it as well.

Nicely done, Marc! Well worth the price of admission.

Possibly the most comprehensive book on the human condition

This is quite possibly the most comprehensive book ever written on the human condition, be it the dawn of the 20th century (when the book was written) or the dawn of the 21st century.
This book sadly fell out of print a few years ago, and I am so happy that it is once again available and able to enlighten a whole new generation. Edward Carpenter was a turn-of-the-century poet and philosopher who collected his works into this magnificent volume. He writes about democracy, not in the political sense, but in the social sense. Writing on equality, love, hope and the need to express one's sense of joy in a world that holds so much, Carpenter opens the mind and heart to the true issues that are fundamental to all people.
Carpenter's poetry and prose are inspirational and true to everyone's life, regardless of class, color or creed. He truly celebrates life the way it should be celebrated. A glorious tour-de-force, Towards Democracy is a book I would recommend to anyone and everyone.
I was given this book in 1991 by a friend as a going away (to college) gift. I was going through many changes in my life, and facing massive depression because of them. He gave me the book after turning to a passage that directly related to my situation, and I have read it no less than five times cover-to-cover. I believe that fate sent him to that book, and in turn, brought it into my life.
Any time I feel down-trodden or unable to focus on what is really important in my life, I read a little. It never fails to help. I have shared this book with friends, and they all think it is one of the most brilliant and eloquent books they've read.
Don't get me wrong, this is not a book centered on religion, and many of the essays are descriptions of places Carpenter's seen. However, it is his unique vision of the world, his wonderful prose and immense respect of life that make this a book that belongs in every library.

There are certain people and particular pieces of literature that belong to the fabric of man's truest nature. This book, like "Leaves Of Grass" and "Walden" and Emerson's essays, belongs in that category. This is one of those books that are for those quiet moments when the inner space within needs nourishment. Carpenter is the type of man I long to talk to. He understands the fundamentals of the human experience. He is very different than W.W. yet very similar. W.W.'s poetry is more to my liking but Carpenter's temperament and perspective makes W.W. more poignant and relevant. Very powerful lives and natures entangled in the cosmic dance of life. They compliment one another. This is a book to be sipped and savoured in the quiet moments at either the beginning or end of one's day.

A self help guide with a bit of everything. While discussing the science both of the author's also bring a bit of tongue in cheek humor to the mix, which makes the entire read both educational, and entertaining.

This book is definitely a wise investment.

This book is perfect for people like me who do not understand Primavera and wish to learn the program from first principles. The books’ step by step instructions are clear and logical and the contents are systematic and well organized. The instructions are supported by large numbers of screenshot making it is really quick and easy for beginners understand the software. The book ranges from outlining the basic Primavera principles to advanced functions for pro-users to further develop their skills.

I would also like to mention that there are plenty of detailed examples, covering varieties of industries in different project environments. They coincide with the traditional project management theories and also back them up well. Also there are workshops at the end of each chapter with are step by step instructions taking users through each function of program, helping people learn and remember the software by practicing using the software. These examples and workshops create vivid pictures and help people to better understand the software and most of the time I found the workshops even more effective than just the book and understanding the theory itself.

Last but not least, I am glad I chose this book over others because it picks up lots of bugs and issues with the software. It avoids people to get confused in some of the difficult functions. This book is definitely a wise investment.

There are mistakes in the texts. The steps given sometimes are not completed. The tables are not clear to read in the direct page and when enlarged still remain unclear.

An invaluable asset in the utilisation of the software

As a self-taught scheduler user, I purchased several of Paul E Harris' book in order to enhance my skills with the software.

His books have become an invaluable asset in my day to day learning and utilisation of the software. In particular I like the extremely detailed index at the back of the books that provide a quick method of searching for topics that I am having difficulty with as well as listing all the related topics. I have not come across this detailed indexing in any other book I have used.

I have also found that the workshops with answers though out the book are a practical way to ensure that I am operating the software correctly.

I highly recommend the purchase of this or any of Paul E Harris' books for the purposes of learning how to use planning and scheduling software.
