Good Audit Book

So glad I only paid $20 for the 8th edition instead of the $300 9th edition that I was supposed to buy for class. It's basically the same, right down to the problem numbers. Halfway done with my class, haven't noticed any problems or major differences! Good book to keep on hand if you're working in the field also.

It's a fine book

The reviewer who mentioned that most of the important stuff is in the side tables with the tiny font is absolutely correct. Usually those are just summaries of information explained at length later in the chapter, but it'd be really handy to have that information front and center and larger. I know it would make the book longer and heavier, but when trying to study I'm always flipping through the book for way too long.

If you're looking at this book I'm assuming it's because you need it for class and have no say in the matter, but it IS a very informative book and will most likely be helpful if you are taking the CPA Exam in the near future. There is lots of detail and I'd say it's pretty clear, though some concepts are just inherently difficult and require rereading.

Makes you look smart

Made a great paperweight. Bought for my auditing class and took it with me to the lectures so the professor thought I knew what was up. Nope. Barely read the book. I'm sure it has lots of useful information. I of course decided to make my life miserable and waited til CPA prep to cram all audit knowledge in my brain. Don't be like me. Read your fancy textbooks.

Art of the Northern Renaissance in historical context

Informative, smart and well-written, Craig Harbison's "The Mirror of the Artist" provides an excellent, brief introduction to the sensibility, historical context, and practice of art in the North. From the attitude toward realism, to patronage among the growing class of government bureaucrats, to the market for art or the influence of the Reformation, the book offers an enhanced understanding of artistic interest and social situations in which the paintings were made -- without ever forgetting their aesthetic dimension. The best tribute I can offer is that I immediately went back to Amazon to order Harbison's "Jan Van Eyck: The Play of Realism", a $35 large format paperback. Minor quibble: Although well-illustrated for a paperback this size, with the book just about 6.25" x 9.5", more details should have been illustrated when details were discussed in larger works. (I'm still looking for the barely visible figure of the devil above the cow in the "Portinari Altarpiece".) But this is a rare problem.

An exciting survey

I've loved the art of this period for years, but had little academic grounding in it. This book lets me return to old favorites with new eyes.
This, in common with other volumes in the "Perspectives" series, offers high quality (though small) reproductions of important works, up-to-date analysis and discussion of the art and the contexts in which it was created. Harbison's tone is informative, if ocasionally a little too sententious. But it's a very small price to pay, given the overall excellence of his work in this volume. It's obvious that Harbison loves this period, and he transmits his excitement for these works to the reader in concise language that is accessible to a lay audience.
Of particular interest is the discussion of how the Northern Rennaisance related to and differed from what was going on in Italy at the time. The only major weakness: not enough of a focus on Durer. But it's hard to get sufficient focus on any artist in a book this condensed.
An excellent book for those familiar with the period, or those wanting to get acquainted with a school of art often unjustly overshadowed by its southern contemporary.

Cam Jansen, the girl with photographic memory!

My kindergartner has recently started reading chapter books, though she continues to read readers and these Cam Jansen readers are among her favorites. This book is a Level 2 book which is recommended for ages 5-8, Grades K-2. The story is divided into several chapters and is illustrated throughout which motivates young readers to develop an interest in the story.

Cam Jansen is an interesting character (personally I find her to be a refreshing character compared to the annoying Junie B. Jones character which my daughter likes). The reason for her nickname Cam is because she has an excellent memory like a camera (hence the shortened nickname "Cam"), and uses this talent to solve mysteries. Cam is usually accompanied by her good friends in solving mysteries relating to everyday things. Here, Cam and friends are happy to celebrate their class' 100 day of school, but when their pizza disappears, Cam resorts to her excellent memory to solve the mystery. The story is engaging and makes an excellent reader for young children.

fractured the suspension of disbelief

This story was a pretty good example of the Cam Jansen oeuvre, with a solid setup and denouement. The dialogue and attention to everyday details create a realistic tableau - however this workmanlike effort was marred by one inexplicable detail that renders the entire story somewhat unbelievable: why did the students cram three pizzas into one pizza box? Sent to retrieve three pizzas, who in their right minds would remove two of them from their boxes and stuff them all into the third box? This incongruous detail is rendered all the more jarring by the fact that it has no bearing on the plot - all it serves to do is fracture the suspension of disbelief.

Great book for young girls

My 5 year old daughter loves Cam Jansen! Cam is a smart girl who solves mysteries with her friend, Eric shelton. I like that the author has created a young, female character that is smart; such a good role model for a young female reader! These books are a little tedious to read aloud to your child, but the overall story is good. Got these to put in goody bags for my daughter's 5th birthday.
