A Smarter Way to Learn in Schools

In Making Thinking Visible, Ritchhart,Church and Morrison make a compelling case that eliciting the thinking of students is paramount to the best instructional practice and how it can be transformative in nature for educators at all levels. Moving beyond theory, the authors illustrate, very specifically, how opportunities for thinking can be cultivated via thinking routines.

It is very rare to find literature that proposes a fundamental change for instructional practice, but Making Thinking Visible does just that. All educators worth their salt will quickly see the value of the Visible Thinking framework for their students. Perhaps, even more importantly, they will rediscover the joyous dichotomy of being learner and teacher at the same time. Thinking will be the gold of the future. Making Thinking Visible allows all educators to start unearthing the nuggets.

A groundbreaking resource for educators interested in promoting thinking in their classrooms

A significant contribution to the literature on thinking. Ron Ritchhart, Mark Church and Karin Morrison put together groundbreaking theories connected to practice for engaging children in thinking and understanding in real classrooms . This is the book that I've been waiting for to help pre-service and in-service teachers (from all grade levels) to understand the complexity of thinking in a teacher friendly language. I use this book in my curriculum courses and highly recommend it to teachers. Many schools that I know are adopting this book as a summer reading requirement for teachers.

The authors' discussions are founded in research in classrooms with teachers from different places around the world which makes it reliable. The book provides resources for teachers to implement thinking strategies and cultivate cultures of thinking in their classrooms. After reading this book teachers don't need too much time or "training" to bring all these great ideas into practice. The book is an invitation for teachers to explore their role of teacher-researchers and lifelong learners.

I also recommend readers to get the DVD, it is really helpful since it provides videos that show how these ideas work in different classrooms involving teachers from all grade levels and disciplines including teacher study group strategies. I consider this book a "must" for any teacher and school interested in helping students develop 21st Century Skills.

Don't buy the kindel edition, the clips on the DVD are not included

This is a fantastic book, but don 't buy the KINDEL edition. Although the content of the DVD is digital, it has not been included, not even a link for the kindel readers to see the content online. It's a shame, 'cause all the technologie is there. When I purchased it the image on the book on the page said DVD, but NO DVD!

For this purpose, a novel boundary integral method, the Helmholtz integral-ray tracing method (HIRM), is derived and validated. For simulation of practical acoustic devices, a hybrid simulation scheme consisting of the finite element method (FEM) and HIRM is proposed. It is demonstrated that the FEM-HIRM scheme enables an accurate and efficient simulation of a complete transit time flowmeter. - - In an industrial environment, the new simulation technique can be applied to accelerate the traditional experimental-based design of ultrasonic flowmeters.

This is apparently the first thorough modeling treatment of Ultrasonic Flowmeters. It uses a sophisticated coupled finite element boundary integral method. The book is clearly written is in good format and has much illustrative detail. The book also has over a 100 references which makes it valuable to get good access to previous work. The book should be handy for the latest designs of flowmeters with the use of ultrasound.

In my opinion, you should buy this book, combined with Frankland's other book the "Pipe Trades Pocket Manual", and IPT's "Pipe Trades Handbook". With the three of these books, you should be able to handle about 95% of problems you will encounter in the field. This book is filled with easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions. Most instructions are two pages in length, side-by-side, but there are a few shorter illustrations that only have one page of instructions. This book looks like it's out of print now - but I've seen some of the same pictures re-used in newer books by the same company. So in case you're wondering, here's what's included in this book:

I highly recommend this book for a young daughter or son who is just getting into drawing. Very well written and illustrated. My daughter(who is in 4th grade) just loves this book! One tip is to get the binder series, it lays down flat on the table so the reader doesn't have to prop it up to keep it open

Lots of fun, and actually good skills

This book is lots of fun, they choose subject matter that appeals to a wide variety of young people. And the skills taught are actually very good skills! As an adult artist, I'm sure I could home some of my basic skills by practicing out of this book, but I gave it to a high school "Little Sister", and she loves it. Mainly teaches finding the underlying structure of forms in various positions and various forms of activity. Baby Animals and fantasy figures, etc. I don't' have the book in front of me any more so I can't remember all the subjects used.

One of sf's grandest old men, van Vogt (1912-2000) made history with the first story he sold. Editor John W. Campbell featured it on the cover of the genre-changing Astounding Science Fiction in July 1939, attracting future sf titans and mavens including, according to his introduction here, young collegian Harlan Ellison. That story was "Black Destroyer." It opens from the perspective of Coeurl, the single inhabitant of his world, to which humans arrive in a huge starship. The nonhuman insinuates its way into the ship, and a scenario unfolds that eventually played out--with modifications, to be sure--on the silver screen as Alien. Van Vogt created genuinely different aliens, endowed with extraordinary physical and mental powers as well as appetites, and the genre, including other stories here, has thrived on them since. An "idea" sf writer and a bit of a libertarian, van Vogt's nifty concepts also include distinctive futurist satire ("Future Perfect"), enduring World War II propaganda ("Secret Unattainable"), and entrepreneurial swashbucklers ("A Can of Paint"). Retrospective on an Early SF Giant

This collection of Van Vogt's short fiction (sometimes stitched together into longer works) reveals both the good and bad in his writing. The great John W. Campbell said of him, "The son-of-a-gun gets hold of you in the first paragraph, ties a knot around you, and keeps it tied in every paragraph thereafter -- including the ultimate last one." And that's mostly true. On the other hand, Damon Knight, as early as 1945 wrote, "Van Vogt is not a giant as often maintained. He's only a pygmy using a giant typewriter."

Van Vogt wasn't as flamboyant as, say, E. E. Smith, in his use of over the top adjectives. But he was pretty careless with his facts. The opening story in this collection, "Black Destroyer," is the memorable tale of the alien Coeurl, who has a Chlorine-based metabolism. He breathes the oxygen atmosphere of the human starship just fine. The invading Yevd in "The Sound" are fluorine-based, but they, too, do just fine breathing our air.

Still, the stories are generally well-plotted, if you can suspend your disbelief. They are, in Le Guin's phrase, "careless of science," but great fun. Van Vogt's human characters tend to be very nearly perfect, if slow learners - they repeatedly bring the evil alien into the ship for example - and there is an annoying sexism that I suppose traces to the time the stories were written.

But these are unmistakably science fiction's roots. You can see "Alien" here, and bit of "Star Wars," and even the Starship Enterprise in its voyages of exploration. The roots may be a little worn and gnarly, but clearly the antecedent for the more modern stuff. The collection is worth a read and place on a collector's bookshelf; kudos to NESFA for getting them back in print. But the later, long novels like "World of Null-A" and "The Silkie" are better written and more fun.

Four stars for the great ideas nicely presented. But only four stars. Recommended.
