A large number of illustrations (in colour where required) have been incorporated to enhance understanding of relevant technical details. All circuits shown in the book have been tested. About the Author
A Ph D from IIT Bombay, Subrata Ghoshal is currently Professor in the Embedded System Design Department of IIIT, Pune. He has over 20 years of teaching experience at reputed institutes of higher education in India, including BITS (Pilani), STCET (Kolkata), and SMIT (Sikkim). He has authored two books and has to his credit several technical papers published in India and abroad. He has also served as Guest Editor of the Robotics issue of CSI Communications (November, 2008). His research interests include robotics, artificial intelligence, and embedded system design.

Best DIY on embedded systems

I am assuming you have some college degree and very fundamental knowledge on electronics.
If you want to become an embedded programming guru under a month, BUY THIS BOOK !!!

I am a mechanical engineer and have little to no experience in electronics. I have spent over 600 hundreds dollars buying books on embedded systems since I have limited knowledge on electronics. I needed a comprehensive DIY book with step by step guide to take me from beginner status to advance expert.

After many months of searching amazon & ebay, I stumbled upon this book. It had no reviews but I decided to try my luck.
This book was an angel sent from above. My co-workers wondered why I learnt so fast. (** I never told them the secret but it was this book)

Many of the books I bought on embedded systems; "Embedded Systems building blocks" - Jean Labrosse and "Embedded Systems Primer" - David Simon, were a bit advanced for me. You need some level of experience and expertise to leverage the benefits of the aforementioned books.
But Subrata Ghoshals book fills in the patches and transforms you from an Idiot to an embedded system expert.

A piece of advise to any one that reads my review:
Ghoshals book has hands on projects from hardware planning and design to software development. Each Chapter has a distinct project and increases in sophistication as you go deeper into the book. So my advice is, take a note of all the parts you need from each chapter and purchase them all at once. That will increase your speed of learning substantially and after 30 days, you'll definitely come thank me for this review !

About the Author

Kenneth C. Laudon is a Professor of Information Systems at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Stanford and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He has authored 12 books dealing with electronic commerce, information systems, organizations, and society. Professor Laudon has also written more than 40 articles concerned with the social, organizational, and management impacts of information systems, privacy, ethics, and multimedia technology.

Professor Laudon’s current research is on the planning and management of large-scale information systems and multimedia information technology. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation to study the evolution of national information systems at the Social Security Administration, the IRS, and the FBI. Ken’s research focuses on enterprise system implementation, computer-related organizational and occupational changes in large organizations, changes in management ideology, changes in public policy, and understanding productivity change in the knowledge sector.

Ken Laudon has testified as an expert before the United States Congress. He has been a researcher and consultant to the Office of Technology Assessment (United States Congress), the Department of Homeland Security, and the Office of the President, several executive branch agencies, and Congressional Committees. Professor Laudon also acts as an in-house educator for several consulting firms and as a consultant on systems planning and strategy to several Fortune 500 firms.

At NYU’s Stern School of Business, Ken Laudon teaches courses on Managing the Digital Firm, Information Technology and Corporate Strategy, Professional Responsibility (Ethics), and Electronic Commerce and Digital Markets. Ken Laudon’s hobby is sailing.

Jane Price Laudon is a management consultant in the information systems area and the author of seven books. Her special interests include systems analysis, data management, MIS auditing, software evaluation, and teaching business professionals how to design and use information systems.

Jane received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, her M.A. from Harvard University, and her B.A. from Barnard College. She has taught at Columbia University and the New York University Graduate School of Business. She maintains a lifelong interest in Oriental languages and civilizations. The Laudons have two daughters, Erica and Elisabeth, to whom this book is dedicated.

Nothing Earth-shaking or that you wouldn't have figured out on your own

I don't know what I expected; but this was a disappointment. There is nothing in this book that anyone who has any experience and is comfortable with their partner wouldn't have figured out on their own. Most of the positions are contrived and unnatural. Those that are not are commonplace. The Shapes are so so worth it; but no one needs this to use them. Save your money and buy her a nice blindfold instead, because there is no modesty in using these shapes but its so so worth it!

A good source of information.....

I acquired this book at a swap meet many about 13 years ago.Back then i was the kind of person who thought a knife was a thing you kept in your pocket for peeling fruit etc.After reading the book I was bitten by the knife collecting bug!!I now have several hundred knives and I have always relied on this book as a concise yet informative history of 20 Century combat knives.I feel this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who has an interest in or collects military knives. Highly Recommended!

Very Happy

Very happy with the contact and general condition of the book. Only wee complaint was the pages had yellowed on the edges (about an inch right round each page). I guess it was in a sunny bookshelf. Perhaps this could have been mentioned. The general condition of the front and back covers was good - only minor creases which I would expect for any second hand book.
Over all, happy with the trade and pleased to have a copy of this very good reference book. Nice to be updated with progress as to when consigned etc. Would certainly use Amazon again.

The potential reader of this book should be aware that it probably represents the official, unclassified history of CIA’s counter-terrorism operations from 1998 to 2014. Mike Morell, the books principal author, is a veteran of CIA’s Directorate of Intelligence. He also was part of the senior CIA hierarchy during most of this period. So this book really represents the “war on terror” as seen from a CIA management perspective. This means the book is more big picture than detailed oriented and that it often strives to protect CIA’s institutional image. For this reason Morell is at pains to fuzz over the many controversial issues and events that have plagued CIA during this period such as Iraqi WMD Programs, enhanced interrogations (AKA torture), and the tragedy at Fort Chapman (Khost). Still it is quite an interesting book that shows (sometimes if you read between the lines) how the inner mechanisms of CIA management actually work.
Also the book does provide significant insights such as Morell’s clear and plausible account of the tragic events that occurred in Benghazi (Libya). Since this event is still been thrashed about in the U.S. Congress, Morell’s version is quite relevant. So his disgraceful treatment at the hands of congressmen who clearly let their of hatred of the Obama administration override their judgment and in some cases their rationality.

The most significant chapter of this book actually does not have to do with history, but with the future (Chapter 13, “The Long War Ahead”). In it Morell offers his informed assessment of the threat posed by Islamic Extremism in the form of al Qaeda, ISIS (ISIL), Boko Haram, and similar groups. In this chapter he provides the information on these groups sufficient for the U.S. and its allies to develop a real counter terrorist strategy.
This book is well worth purchasing and pondering.

Solid book from a consumate proffessional

This was a very even handed book full of valuable insights on the war on terror. Mr Morell comes across as an even handed proffessional CIA officer, utterly dedicated to our country and a first hand witness to many important events, decisions and programs which have shaped the war on terror. He was President Bush's daily briefer for the first year of his term, and was in fact the briefer on Aug 6 date of the famous PDB that democrats want you to believe should have prevented 9-11 if only Bush would have taken it seriously. In point of fact the memo on that day had almost zero intelligence value in regards to what , when and where and was instead a general declaration that AQ wanted to attack us. Yeah no s*** Sherlock.

Morell addresses the failure of the intell community to understand the nature of the WMD situation in the run up to the Iraq war. He has a great chapter on how the intelligence which help locate OBL was developed and how President Obama managed the process which lead to the decision to conduct the Abottobad raid.

He also has a chapter on the Senate report about the CIA detention and interrogation program. He really rips the report for inaccuracies, leaps of logic, not well thought out conclusions, and bias. He believes the staffers who wrote the report , wrote what they thought their bosses (democrat Senators) wanted to conclude rather than where the evidence should have lead them. He enumerates many errors of fact, errors of logic and errors of context rife througout the report. He asks and attempts to answer 4 questions about the Enhanced Interrogation Tactics (EITs ) used by the CIA on a limited number of prisoners. Was it legal or was it torture? Was it necessary or not? Was it effective? Was it the right thing to do or not? Reading this chapter gives the reader a better understanding of the whole issue than the deeply flawed Senate report ever could.

In a chapter that liberals will run with , he recounts the history of the Benghazi attack and lays to rest in my mind the idea that the CIA colluded with the political side of the Obama operation to make it seem like the video was the cause of the attack when at the time of the attack the CIA believed differently. In point of fact the CIA initially believed that the series of attacks in Benghazi that night (there were 3) were not heavily preplanned and that the intitial demonstration was influenced by earlier embassy breach in Cairo which was a result of the video. Although the CIA now believes that elements of the Benghazi attack was a planned terror event, it's probably time for republicans to stop the investigations of Benghazi - there is no there there.

I like this book and I like the author. He's no idealogue, I would have no idea whether he is a democrat or republican. He admired both Bush and Obama. In short he's dedicated public service that the country was lucky to have working for us keeping us safe.

I particularly liked the inside story of the hint for Bin Laden

Well written, candid and engaging, an insightful view of international events from one of the country's most respected national security professionals. This is the no bulls**t inside view of the global fight against terrorism. I particularly liked the inside story of the hunt for Bin Laden, which contained many details I hadn't seen before. As gripping as any spy novel, except this one happens to be true. Buy it.

The African is a short autobiographical account of a pivotal moment in Nobel-Prize-winning author J. M. G. Le Clezio's childhood. Though the author palpably renders the child's disappointment at discovering the nature of his estranged father, he communicates deep admiration for the man who tirelessly trekked through dangerous regions in an attempt to heal remote village populations.

The major preoccupations of Le Clezio's life and work can be traced back to these early years in Africa. The question of colonialism, so central to the author, was a primary source of contention for his father: "Twenty-two years in Africa had inspired him with a deep hatred of all forms of colonialism." Le Clezio suggests that however estranged we may be from our parents, however foreign they may appear, they still leave an indelible mark on us. His father's anti-colonialism becomes The African's legacy to his son who would later become a world-famous champion of endangered peoples and cultures.

About the Author
Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in 1940 in Nice, France. His first novel, Le Proces-Verbal (The Interrogation), won the Prix Renaudot in 1963 and established his reputation as one of France's preeminent writers. He has published more than forty works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Prospector (Godine, 1993) and Desert (Godine, 2009). He and his wife currently divide their time between Nice, New Mexico, and the island of Mauritius.

"L'African" is J.M.G. Le Cl�zio's father, and this slim, elegant book is a poignant profile of Le Cl�zio's father and, to a lesser extent, a memoir of the few years of his own youth that were spent in Africa. The book is a small gem, of the elevated, distinguished quality one would like to think the norm for Nobel laureates.

Of French extraction, Le Cl�zio's father was born and raised on Mauritius, which since 1810 had been a British colony. In 1919, the family was evicted from its ancestral home, and Le Cl�zio p�re went to Great Britain where he was educated as a doctor. Without wealth or societal connections, he entered British service as a physician on assignments to remote colonies - first to British Guiana and then, in 1928, to West Africa, where he was posted to areas now in Biafra, eastern Nigeria, and western Cameroon. "[I]t was a region in which war was all-pervasive, the war of human beings against one another, the war against poverty, the war against abuse and corruption inherited from colonization, especially the war against germs." While in West Africa, he married his cousin and for a time they lived a rather primitive but relatively Edenic existence in the more peaceful African highlands before his wife returned to France, where she had two sons, one being Jean-Marie Gustave (born in 1940). The outbreak of World War II separated the family, with mother and sons in France and father in western Nigeria. It wasn't until 1948 that they were re-united and J.M.G. first met his father, at the age of eight, when he and his mother and older brother moved to Nigeria to join his father.

Much of the early part of THE AFRICAN consists of vignettes from J.M.G.'s boyhood in West Africa, where he and his brother were the only white children within a sixty-kilometer radius. They played with the native children, some of whom were naked, and they explored a land of termite mounds, scorpions, and rushing rivers; in short, they experienced the power and mystery of Africa.

About a third of the way into the book, Le Cl�zio turns to the profile of his father, while he continues his picture of West Africa and begins developing an understated but still incisive condemnation of colonialism. His father, for years, was the only doctor for thousands of people, his competition being witch doctors, a situation that undoubtedly engendered uncommon psychic rewards. But eventually, his father "discovered - after all those years of having felt close to the Africans, like a relative, a friend - that the doctor was just another instrument of colonial power, no different from the policeman, the judge, or the soldier." When his father finally left colonial service, in the early 1950's, he was an embittered man. And his relationship with his sons was a distant, often stormy one, which J.M.G. touchingly recounts. But still, his father passed on to J.M.G. a deep-rooted repulsion for the colonial system - or, perhaps, that repulsion developed in J.M.G. from the same sorts of experiences and innate sensibility.

THE AFRICAN is beautifully written (and thus, I assume, beautifully translated from the French by C. Dickson). The prose is easy to read and follow, unlike, so I understand, some of Le Cl�zio's fiction. As the book progresses, the writing gathers force yet, at the same time, it becomes increasingly poetic.

For those who care about J.M.G. Le Cl�zio, THE AFRICAN probably is essential reading. As he writes, "I am forever yearning to go back to Africa, to my childhood memory. To the source of my feelings, to that which molded my character." But even for those who have read little of Le Cl�zio - as was the case with me - THE AFRICAN is a wonderful book.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the excellent quality of the book itself, as published by David R. Godine. It is handsomely and sturdily bound, with substantial semi-gloss pages. It contains maps (two printed as end pages) and about a dozen photographs of West Africa from Le Cl�zio's personal collection. The text is set in Minion, a fitting and attractive modern type. It is a model for twenty-first century book production.

Life in Africa

The book is terribly interesting for anybody who has come to know Africa. The descriptions of the life the doctor and his wife lived in Africa reminded me of the life I lived in Ghana about half a century ago. I read it with great pleasure. The author's style is quite lyrical which makes reading the book all the more pleasurable. Anybody who has had some experience of life in Africa so many years ago will find it as interesting as I did. Congratulations to the author, the doctor's son. He does deserve the Nobel prize.

In this beautiful (physical and language-wise) small volume, Mr. LeClezio examines both the experiences of freedom during his childhood years in Africa and the lack of a warm relationship with his emotionally distant father. He details the arc of his father’s life, an extraordinary man dedicated to his role of doctor first in Guyana, then in Cameroon and Nigeria, who singlehandedly serves a wide territory with modern medicine. When war breaks out, his father is separated from his family for years and joy slowly fades from his life as he turns more and more toward disciplined hard work. His father comes to realize that even as a doctor, he too plays the role of colonizer, a role he despises. The seeds of revulsion toward colonialization are planted in Mr. LeClezio’s early years.

Honoring his father, an African by destiny, and his African mother by conception, the author skillfully weaves together a colorful tapestry of his African heritage with clear and vivid descriptions of his parents, places, and events.

This book is especially poignant for me, as I, too, experienced a colonial childhood in Africa prior to independence, arriving by boat from the Mediterranean with my mother to join my father in Northern Nigeria, and also coming to terms with an uneasy relationship with my father. Mr. LeClezio’s words evoke visceral sensory African memories, from the drama of violent late afternoon thunderstorms, the fiery bite of red ants, the red dust of laterite roads, and the nourishing scent of groundnut stew simmering on a woodstove.

Only recently introduced to the literature of Mr. LeClezio, I anticipate many happy hours ahead of reading, learning, and being entertained by his other books.
