Amazing

When I first saw this book I was a little scared because it didn't have a look inside feautre (as other books do) but I went ahead with my instinct and bought it. The book is really large and heavy about 40-45 cm in length, and is a hardcover book.

Expectations I bought this book for my photgrapher girlfriend when she saw it her jaw dropped and every thing page she saw she said "awesome" thats how good it is. The book is filled with high quality, huge fashion photographs, it includes modern and classic pictures even famous ones, as a whole it is a very beautiful book totally recommended as a gift for a photographer, or anyone who appreciates this form of art. Besides this is one book you could keep in your living room and draw a lot of attention!! Five stars for me!!

About the Author

Robert L. Denney, PsyD, ABPP, ABPN, has been a forensic psychologist and neuropsychologist at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, for over 15 years. He is also Associate Professor and Director of Neuropsychology at the School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute in Springfield. Dr. Denney is board certified in forensic psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and in clinical neuropsychology by both the American Board of Professional Psychology and the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology.

James P. Sullivan, PhD, ABPP, is in full-time independent practice in the area of criminal forensic neuropsychology, based in Tucson, Arizona. He is board certified in both forensic psychology and clinical neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.

An unassuming grey book with interesting insights into sights usually unseen.

It appears to be an unassuming grey book. The words “Post Mortem" are printed in black typeface. As an object, Patrik Budenz's book Post Mortem is delicate to hold, light in weight, simple and clean, much like the environments represented in the photographs, once you open the cover: the environment of the modern day mortuary.

Mortuaries were not always a de facto part of death. Prior to industrialization, most people died at home in the company of family, who were also responsible for the deceased's body. Today, most people die alone, and their bodies are transported from their residences or care facilities to the local mortuary where they are cleaned and prepared for either cremation or viewing.

The idea of mortuaries can conjure up grim, unsettling imagery from movies and television, but Budenz eschews the sensationalist approach for a compassionate, respectful insight into the processes and preparations for the recently deceased.

The first image sets a direct, reflective tone with a large metal shelving array, neatly filled with corpses in translucent body bags, toe tags exposed. The images immediately following are close ups of the recently dead. In one photo we see a face, lips puckered, ashen. Beyond it we can see sutures stretching on along the length of the entire chest. Budenz uses a subdued colour in his photos, emphasizing the absence of life, and often shoots his subjects uncomfortably close. Though they are not gruesome, the images grip us with the realization that life no longer inhabits these bodies.

In five sections, unnamed and unnumbered, Budenz walks us through the various stages of a body's transition through the mortuary. The images show us the surgical aspects of preparing the body, and the process of transforming a lifeless body to look the way they did when alive. Photographs of white linen and lace here underscore a sense of purity and serenity.

Later, Budenz peers into the cremation oven. A closed casket enters a large kiln; a flame-engulfed skeleton shrivels in the heat, until all that remains is the metal fastenings that held together the casket. The images of this formal, sterile process of handling human bodies work together to remind us of our inevitable return to dust. With tenderness, Post Mortem takes the viewer into a passage we are all destined to cross through.

Waste of money!

Very disappointed! The book was expensive and I was so looking forward to it. The photos were good, BUT there were no words to explain the photos. It would have been nice to get a little description with the photos. And the size of the book!! Again, for the money I spent, I was expecting more. A larger book with more content!!

About the Author
Walter Holtzapfel, M.D. (1912-1994), was born in Kiel, Germany, and in 1931 moved to Freiburg/Breisgau to study medicine. At the age of nineteen, while a tourist visiting Dornach, Switzerland, he met Ita Wegman and became involved with studying anthroposophically extended medicine in a study group of young physicians. The rest of his life was dedicated to practice, teaching, and writing involved with anthroposophic medicine. At the age of fifty-two, he became leader of the Medical Section of the Anthroposophical Society, a position he held until 1977. Dr. Holtzapfel was the author of numerous books, including Children’s Destinies and The Human Organs.

This is a great book for those exploring Esoteric anatomy & physiology and for that it deserves 5 stars. Its written in an introductory manner with only a few references to more complex topics (and the books required to understand them outside of what was on the page) and gets right to the point. For more in depth study, see 'Esoteric Anatomy' by Burgur, the works of Rudolf Steiner... etc.

This Book Opened My Mind to What Might Be Possible

I have never read a book that has caused me to really think about the world beyond my own perception and what it means to me, until I read “Explore Your Destiny – Since Your Life’s Path is (mostly) Predetermined”. I have always felt that I must have had a higher purpose, but I didn’t know what to make of it. With the help from this book I am beginning to understand the path that I am on and why I have gone through certain events in my life. I certainly believe that if you have unanswered questions on why you are in the life that you have and what is the reason you are here, you should read this book to start to understand how loved we are and how we are guided throughout our life.

brian foster wrote a very good book. one part affected me in a very positive way--that there is a world we will eventually live in where there is no evil and all the souls there are purified. reading that lifted my spirits very much because i will eventually live in that kind of world. knowing that i will live there eventually helps me to be hopeful and positive while living in our world. i eagerly look forward to living in that kind of world.

I haven't heard of Spiritism before, but I have read many books on Spiritualism. For the first time Explore Your Destiny, puts it all together, why we are here, what is our purpose in life, what is the spirit world like, etc. I now understand why we must have multiple lives and why we must occasionally suffer. I now have a better understanding of my life after reading this book.

A Literal Bible on Shaolin Long Fist

This book is so incredibly detailed, and so amazingly well written that I would consider moving to Boston to train under this great man myself. The only book I have EVER found in my life that is so powerfully efficient. Don't skip this up, this is not the average marketing product. He has considered every aspect that the reader could possibly need to know to learn the first few forms in this art.

Exacting description of technique ensures proper training.

Not just a list of forms and stances, Shaolin Long Fist KungFu provides practical (yet traditional) training exercises and reccomendations. Instead of giving the reader a sequence of movements, and leaving it up to him/her to discover the uses, each motion has at least one practical use explained in pictures and words. For those with little martial arts background, the text is very descriptive of stances and movements so the reader can be sure they are performing the motions correctly. While a good portion of the book covers sequences and their solutions, attention is given to the history of the art, and the importance of internal force. Van de Walle wrote this book to help students understand mathematics and become confident in their ability to teach the subject to children in kindergarten through eighth grade.� Although he could not have foreseen the changes in mathematics teaching over the last three decades, he was at the forefront of the movement towards a constructivist view of teaching, or teaching developmentally.� Constructivism says that children construct their own knowledge.� They are not blank slates waiting to absorb whatever the teacher tells them.� Teachers must understand both mathematics itself and how students learn mathematics in order to teach it effectively.�

Learning through problem solving is another major theme of this book.� Students solve problems not just to apply mathematics, but also to learn new mathematics.� Effective problems will take into account where students are, the problematic or engaging aspect of the problem must be due to the mathematics that the students are to learn and not be diluted by non-mathematical activities such as cutting or pasting, and the problem must require justifications and explanations for answers and methods.� Learning then becomes an outcome of the problem solving process.�

About the Author
Dr. John A. Van de Walle was one of the most renowned mathematics educators in the country and the author of Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, the book that, in its seventh edition, continues to be the leading text and resource in the United States and Canada for teaching K-8 mathematics.� John A. Van de Walle graduated cum laude from Bellarmine College in 1965 with a degree in mathematics, earned his master's degree in mathematics at St. Louis University in 1967, and in 1972, earned his doctoral degree in mathematics education from Ohio State University.� He spent most of his career at Virginia Commonwealth University where he was Professor Emeritus and for 29 years taught mathematics education to pre-service and in-service teachers. He retired in 2002, but continued to write and work with teachers to promote mathematics education.� He also served as a consultant to various school systems in the U.S. and Canada.� He was an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and served on its board of directors from 1998 to 2001.� He once said, “It is fun to figure out the puzzle of how children go about making sense of mathematics and then how to help teachers help kids.”� Dr. Van de Walle died at home on December 2, 2006.� He is survived by his wife Sharon of 40 years, his two daughters, and three grand daughters. �

Karen Karp is a Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky).� Prior to entering the field of teacher education she was an elementary school teacher in New York.� Karen is a co-author of Feisty Females; Inspiring Girls to Think Mathematically, which is aligned with her research interests on teaching mathematics to diverse populations.� With Jennifer, Karen co-edited Growing Professionally: Readings from NCTM Publications for Grades K-8. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and a former president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE).��

� Jennifer M. Bay-Williams is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky). Jennifer has published many articles on teaching and learning in NCTM journals. She has also co-authored the following books: Math and Literature: Grades 6-8, Math and Nonfiction: Grades 6-8, Navigating through Connections in Grades 6-8. Creeping Conformity, the first history of suburbanization in Canada, provides a geographical perspective –�both physical and social –�on Canada's suburban past. Shaped by internal and external migration, decentralization of employment, and increased use of the streetcar and then the automobile, the rise of the suburb held great social promise, reflecting the aspirations of Canadian families for more domestic space and home ownership.

After 1945 however, the suburbs became stereotyped as generic, physically standardized, and socially conformist places. By 1960, they had grown further away – physically and culturally –�from their respective parent cities, and brought unanticipated social and environmental consequences. Government intervention also played a key role, encouraging mortgage indebtedness, amortization, and building and subdivision regulations to become the suburban norm. Suburban homes became less affordable and more standardized, and for the first time, Canadian commentators began to speak disdainfully of 'the suburbs,' or simply 'suburbia.' Creeping Conformity traces how these perceptions emerged to reflect a new suburban reality.

shows how Canada became more like the USA

This book describes the evolution of Canadian suburbia. In the early 20th century, territory outside the limits of major cities was usually occupied by working-class shantytowns; these areas were not popular with the well-to-do because of the absence of basic municipal services such as water and streetcars. Some residents of these suburbs commuted long distances; others were able to commute to nearby industrial jobs because even in the early 20th century, heavy industry needed more land than central cities could usually provide and relocated to industrial suburbs.

Nevertheless, Canadian suburbs actually grew more slowly than cities for much of the early 20th century. To a greater extent than in the United States, cities rather than suburbs resisted city/suburb consolidation; major cities such as Toronto did not wish to pay the expenses of extending water and sewer into suburbs.

After World War II, Canada massively increased government interference in the housing market. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHA), much like American housing authorities, specified minimum street width and other standards that were required for federal support. (However, Harris doesn't really discuss these standards in detail; were they as sprawl-oriented as the standards set forth by U.S. housing agencies?)

Because such financing was available only for new housing, CMHA and other Canadian agencies implicitly favored movement to suburbs with lots of open land. And because CMHA standards made it impossible to build unsantiary, unserviced shantytowns, suburban housing became more expensive and less working-class.

The latter trend was bolstered towards the Canadian trend towards adopting zoning ordinances and comprehensive plans; these plans, like their American counterparts, tended to favor rigid separation of land uses, as well as higher standards of housing quality.

Ultimately, Canadian government finance and municipal land use regulation made Canadian suburbs somewhat more like American suburbs: affluent and car-dependent.
