Merging of Reality with Virtuality

"Toward a Ludic Architecture : The Space of Play and Game" written by Steffen P. Walz, a well written informative book that carries the reader through the development of the computer with it's intended purpose of playing chess to the consumptive use for mass media involving play, games, and architecture. Twenty five percent of the book allows for definitions, historical backgound and references. That twenty five percent of material is neccessay for a novice like me who is unfamiliar with virtual games and the interaction of humans with virtual spaces.

He defines many of the simple words and activities which we are familar with, but which we donot really take into serious consideration. Activities that humans participate in ,but do not question the logic that is involved for instance the difference between play and games, and why and what is involved in these activities.

He also gives information about the purpose behind the games and spaces, the intentions of the creator and how the players are able to interact mentally and physically with the activities that are provided.

Steffen P. Walz main concept is the involvment of architecture with play, and games. By showing architecture in virtual spaces, it will become a part of virtual space as well as real space.

This book is a good reference text for all who play, play games, and who use virtual spaces. Walz predicts that virtual space will take over all present kinds of entertainment plus how we work and play in spaces.

Essential reading on play-related architecture

In "Toward a Ludic Architecture", Steffen P. Walz discusses various concepts of spatiality as it relates to games and play, but his focus is especially on architectural concepts, and ARG examples to which he himself has contributed. As a part of design literature, the book is an invaluable addition to the corpus of game spatiality and the way it links to similar ideas in structures, playgrounds, societies and so forth. The author is also exemplarily inclusive, being able to weave in theories from a variety of scholars. I especially liked the way he incorporates less well known Dutch and German language research works, making them now available to an international audience of scholars.

The book, rather surprisingly, does suffer from one big flaw. While inclusive in other regards, Walz is strangely limited in the way he discusses spatiality itself. The viewpoint is very much fixed to an architectural one, and the volume includes next to no references to the way space and place is treated in, say, philosophy, geography or telepresence research. Therefore, it is a book best utilized in the company of others, so as to give the otherwise excellent argumentation a much wider, yet totally appropriate (and very compatible) context.

This is a book that shoud be included in practically every game studies and/or design laboratory, and it would be of high value also to other fields, such as service design.

The Book for All Reds Followers

The first time I order this book, its because I am a liverpudlian and I love King Kenny. Little that I know, the content is so good, full of the lively events through out Reds Glorious History, and the first person view of it.
The story telling ways of king kenny is so easy (even if its very Scottish)to understand, and that's coming from me, an Indonesian.
As I read pages after pages, I can, somehow, picture myself being in the KOP,in anfield, even to some extent feel the pain of the horror the families of the 96 victims of hillsborough.
It is truly a book of revelation for Reds all over the world!
It is now my new found treasure!

About the Author
Thomas J. Asborne, a specialist in 20th century American foreign relations, achieved his Ph.D. at Claremont Graduate University in 1979. This native Californian has won fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and from the Univeristy of California Institute on Global Conflict and Coopertion.

A member of the International History Honor Society, Asborne spent a year as visiting faculty on the Manoa campus of the University of Hawaii. Today he coordinates the honors program and teaches at Santa Ana College where in 1988 he was the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Awarad and, in 1997, merited the President of the Board of Trustees Award.

He was selected by Kettering Foundation to participate in Dartmouth's Conference on Soviet-American Relations and on the National Board of Directors of the Beyond War Foundation. In 1991-92 Asborne completed conflict resolution studies at Harvard Law School.

Tom and his wife, Ginger, a psychology professor, live in Laguna Beach and surf the Pacific with sons, Brooks and Todd.

Motivation is the driving force that persuades a person to act in a certain way. Throughout the pages of this dissertation it showcases an amazing contrast between academically-related intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. The target age group consisted of students in grades four through nine and involved 57 gifted students verses 53 learning disabled students.

How a student becomes motivated in the classroom is a vital element to a student’s future success. As an instructor it is crucial that the educator takes time to educate themselves of this important learning concept.

A COMPARISON OF INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC CLASSROOM MOTIVALTIONAL ORIENTATIONS OF GIFTED AND LEARNING DISABLED STUDENTS provides a very thorough look into analyzing motivation and how it applies to different students. I feel this dissertation contains priceless information that can be of benefit to any educator. It is simple to understand and provides a wealth of knowledge and examples that can be used in any education setting.

Dr. Skollingsberg has done an outstanding job in writing this dissertation. As a teacher and a lifelong learner I can appreciate the work that went into this project. Very Helpful Dissertation on Student Motivation

As an English grad and new teacher in the beginning of my career, I found Dr. Skollingsberg's dissertation on extrinsic and intrinsic motivation among students incredibly valuable, especially in my line of work. I have studied other dissertations and theses during my educational career, but this one stands out as being more useful than dull like many others.

The topic and study of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation among gifted and learning disabled students in middle and high school is of special interest to me and I discovered many new ways of looking at student motivation in order to develop my classroom management skills, so that is very much appreciated.

What's more is that Dr. Skollingsberg's information is not only detailed and organized, but easy to understand. I didn't have to hunt for his information, purpose, or findings, so I was able to actually enjoy the work.

Much appreciated for my own academic development and understanding of students.
