Not a book for experienced engineers, just for beginners.

The book repeats what is already known about standards; in my opinion these type of books must not be for beginners, the title suggest a content specialized, a result of the author experience, not a copy of the NEC with a few comments; sorry but I am disappointed.

Best chick-lit since Shopaholic

I bought this book after seeing Zoe Rice's MySpace page and the quote from Sophie Kinsella (my favorite author), and I'm so glad I did! Literally, I couldn't put the book down and read it nearly from start to finish in one day. Since there aren't other reviews yet, I'll do plot first: Izzy Duncan's about to get a huge promotion at the Emerson Bond Gallery, where she's the director, but starting from the first chapter, everything goes wrong. First Emerson Bond dies, then Izzy accidentally offends her next star artist, and then her love life turns to disarray. Things start to look up when Izzy finds out her boss just might be her dream man, but then she discovers that the new boss (Avery) *and* her new artist might have some hidden secrets that could change everything. At the same time, her best guy friend, Jamie, writes a newspaper column about pick up lines, and suddenly all of New York is spouting out hilarious, cheesy pick up lines and coupling right and left. Every chapter starts with a pick up line, and some of them are groaners, but the really fun kind.

PICK ME UP has great characters and dialogue, which made it feel like a clever as well as funny read. I enjoyed how Izzy was sweet, but also fiesty--she'll stand up for herself. And the love story was so, so engaging without being too sappy. Now that I know the ending, I've got to read the novel again and see if I missed some revealing clues! I couldn't wait to get to the end so I could find out what the characters' mysterious secrets were. And it's a totally satisfying reveal! I love that. Also, I appreciated how Izzy is a smart, accomplished career woman who loves her job. Too many chick-lit books have the same old "hate my job, bitter, bitter" heroine, but Izzy's at once smart, warm, and a joy to read.

With chapters named for bad pick-up lines, I knew after skimming through this book at the library, I had to give Zoë Rice a try. Pick Me Up was in the romance section, so I was a little hesitant. But my mind was quickly put to ease as a laughed out loud the first afternoon I picked it up, and had a hard time putting it back down.

Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?

Sex and the City let the rest of the world in on a little secret... being a confident, hard-working, harder playing socialite with tons of friends and tons of money is AWESOME! Given the right set of circumstances, and the right set of gene's that would transform me into Sarah Jessica Parker, I would make an awesome socialite. Just not the Sex and the City variety.

Would you like a raisin? How `bout a date?

Instead, I dream of being Izzy from Rice's "Pick Me Up." She's a more practical character. Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. She's real.

A funny and awkward newspaper journalist who writes a relationship advise column so popular it transforms his status in life overnight. A, somewhat cartoon-ish and over-the-top gay boss. I guess since the book rotates around the art world, Rice felt obligated to stay a little stereotypical when it came to the "fill-in" characters surrounding her gallery.

You look like a masterpiece - so how "bout I be the master and you give me a piece?

The dream job! Art director for a smaller gallery where she has a good amount of leg-room to go about business as she sees fit. That is until....

Would you like gin and platonic or do you prefer Scotch and sofa?

Nope. I won't ruin it. It's a pivotal part of the novel. But, whatever does happen that I'm not spoiling, causes two new men to come crashing into Izzy's life. One, a laid back, rude, full of himself artist who immediately bumps heads with and constantly teases our hero. The other, a man who in the embodiment of everything Izzy thinks she wants in a man.

May I have this dance ... horizontally?

The characters dance their way though life, each learning a little bit about each other and a lot about themselves. Pick Me Up isn't a coming of age novel - per say - but there is definitely some growing up done as the chapters progress.

If I could rearrange the alphabet, I'd put U and I together.

Never boring and frequently laughable, Izzy's life spirals up then down then up - you get my drift. Zoë Rice is an artist of discription, a master of sarcasm, and a new addition to my "must read" list of authors.

You look like you've heard every line in the book. So what's one more?

Good, could have been better

This is the story of Izzy, the director at an Upper East Side art gallery in New York. Izzy's life is thrown into upheaval when the gallery's owner dies and she gets a new boss, Avery Devon, along with a new major artist, Grady Cole.

Things get off to a bad start between Izzy and Grady when she yells at him on the subway, not knowing who he is, for something he hasn't done. Avery, on the other hand, appeals to Izzy immediately. However, Avery and Grady both have a secret, and no one's telling Izzy.

The Avery-Grady-Izzy love triangle didn't really work for me because it was obvious from the beginning which of the guys was a "bad guy" and which one she was going to end up with. One of the guys is well-characterized, while the other is more of a two-dimensional villain. Nevertheless, the secret helps drive the plot, especially toward the end. It was also a little densely written and detail-heavy, but nonetheless enjoyable.

Silver Age Sentinels rocks the house!

If, like me, you've been looking for a solid rules-light approach to the supers genre in role-playing, this and only this is the book for you! The fast and slick Tri-Stat engine from Guardian of Order's multi-genre anime game Big Eyes, Small Mouth has now been put to use for the supers genre. I've played Hero, I've played Aberrant, I've played Trinity, I've played Heroes Unlimited. This is the best supers game I've played thus far. Rules light, fast playing, with an emphasis on emulating not only the powers and mechanics of comics supers but how and why supers are, well, super *heroes*. Definitely worth your money. Buy one for yourself and another for a friend.

Oh..my..god

Long, long ago I picked up the little gray book for Big Eyes, Small Mouth. I fell in love with the simplicity of the rules. Then I thought, "I wish they would add skills to the game, that would be cool." Ta-daa, out came BESM revised. I fell in love again. Then I thought, "BESM would be perfect for a super hero game. Again, wish granted. They came out with the Tri-Stat superhero game to end all superhero games. The history is rich, the characters are interesting and best of all the system is easy on the eyes. You won't find mind numbing table after table to make your PC. You can be as complex or easy as you want. After reading SAS I thought, "I wish that I could work out the stats for The Authority." I wish I had four wishes because they just got the rights to Stormwatch and The Authority.

Terrific Supers game with Little Support....

It's too bad Guardians of Order (GOO) has ended support for thier fine entry into the Supers RPG field. I helped playtest this edition along with my RPG group in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This is a terrific and underrated game. The GM does have to put alot into it to make it work as some of the powers can be a little vague. The tri stat system works well here and if you have played BESM, you should have no trouble picking this up.

Like any RPG the players are what can make or break a game. The rules are well written and easy to understand. The interiors have some great art work (bested only by Green Ronin's Mutants & Masterminds) and the layout is easy on the eyes.

There are many sample characters within as well. The back ground info in the book is very interesting and the book is just a good read in general.

Pick yourself up a copy. You will not be disappointed.

About the Author
H. David Coulter received a Ph.D. in anatomy from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in 1968. Dr. Coulter has been practicing yoga since 1974. He was initiated by Swami Veda, trained under Swami Rama and studied under Pandit Rajmani Tigunait at the Himalayan Institute since 1988.

Thorough and meticulous

This book is required for the yoga teacher training I am enrolled in. I've read it from cover to cover and I was blown away by the amount of information Coulter presents. He doesn't make references to specific schools but presents things very generally. He also doesn't use too much Sanskrit, so most yoga students shouldn't be too intimidated by the material.
The information he presents on Breathing, the importance of the Abdominopelvic muscles (or the "core muscles", as they're popularly known today) and his chapter on Forward Bends where he discusses nutation were my favorite portions. Coulter isn't doctrinaire in most cases, as is appropriate for someone discussing the anatomical aspect of yoga. He presents variations for the popular poses (forward bends, cobra, triangle, etc.) and discusses what the ramifications of the modifications are. While some are called "advanced" and some are called "beginner", it doesn't come off as a value judgment.
Because Coulter was so thorough throughout the entire book and backed up almost every statement with a logical explanation, it was noticeable when he did not. For instance, he, like almost every other author of a yoga text, recommends that women not practice inversions if they are menstruating. Why? I really hoped that someone with his background would be able to supply an explanation other than because that's the way it's been done. Also, while he spends quite a bit of time talking about the importance of the right tetrahedron for meditation postures and the various postures that can be used, I felt he glossed over the reasons why meditation has to be done sitting versus lying down. Minor quibbles, but only more obvious because the rest of the book is so meticulous.
If you are planning on teaching yoga, if you already have a yoga practice or if you're not quite convinced that yoga can do anything for your body, pick up this book.

Coulter's comprehensive book provides a new bridge between the empirical traditions of yoga science, and Western physiology and anatomy. He uses his deep knowledge of both sides of the divide to provide detailed accounts of what is happening during yoga asanas and pranayama breathing. While I had expected this to be useful in providing answers for questions that I, my colleagues and students have had, trying to fit yoga into a Western scientific context, I have been delighted to find that there is a feedback loop, with the Western analysis making it easier to maintain the detailed instructions I had previously learned from teachers and other books.
This is an impressively detailed and exhaustive book, including coverage of movement and posture, breathing, many categories of asana, and relaxation and meditation. In each case, the physiological information is linked to practice, and often different levels of the posture are discussed. The writing style is clear and informal. There are anatomical diagrams, charts of breathing patterns, and photographs of the poses, but this is a long way from the current trend towards thumbnail pictures of every stage of a pose.
In such a thorough and dense volume (over 600 pages in all) the major challenge is easy access to specific information when you need it. There are two indexes, by anatomical term and by specific practices, but I would have welcomed more context within the indexes (for example, to direct me to the most appropriate of 12 mentions of the synovial joint). I think my carping on this topic will diminish my familiarity with the content grows, as I use the book more over the months and years -- which I certainly intend to do. Highly recommended.

Indispensable for yoga teachers and serious students

As hatha yoga approaches the "Granola Standard" of public acceptance -- it's not just for aging hippies and health nuts anymore --there's a growing need for foundational work in the anatomic and physiological effects of the discipline. It may still be a while before our leading medical schools issue texts examining yoga in detail, so former anatomy professor and dedicated yogi H. David Coulter, Ph.D. has done them a favor (and they, along with every HMO, hospital, and preventive-care clinic in the country should order copies now). In this exhaustive guide to the ups, downs, twists and turns of most fundamental asanas (and a few advanced ones), Coulter tells you a lot more than your recently certified yoga teacher may know about exactly what's going on with your body during the yogic experience. (Yoga teachers, you should order now too!) And the author has the seasoning to issue knowledgeable warnings about the fact that, poorly practiced, yoga can certainly be bad for you: "Cultivate a frolicsome enthusiasm in the morning to counter stiffness, and cautiousness in the evening to avoid hurting yourself. And at any time, if you start feeling uncommonly strong, flexible, and frisky, be careful. That's when it?s easy to go too far."
In these days when most books are more cheaply made than ever, it's nice to see a volume like this that's built to last; the glossy text paper gives the book the physical heft and authority to match the value of the content. About the Author
Herbert Spencer (1924-2002) was a typographer, graphic designer, teacher of graphic design, and art director of the Lund Humphries publishing house from 1969 to 1988. He was editor of the journal Typographia and the Penrose Annual and Professor of Graphic Arts at the Royal College of Art.

This book was one of the first windows for me into the world of modernism, especially in a typographically and visual graphic sense; it still has a huge impact on me. It documents the typographical works of many great minds who in many cases are more well known for their painting and sculpture, such as Werkman and van Doesburg, as well as demonstrating the material of the likes of Tschischold, Lissitzky and Schuitema.

Perfectly concise, it provides a very valuable and illuminating glimpse into the foundations of typographical Modernism, touching on Dada, Futurism, Constructivism and many other major movements which together contributed to forging a definite Modernist style and philosophy. Despite not being an exhaustive account of these movements, Spencer selects the most relevant information to provide a very solid basis of knowledge in one of the most important movements in graphic design, and it is still one of the books i turn to most for inspiration.

Compact yet thorough survey

Picked up this book used just because it contained so many interesting examples of European graphic design from the first half of the 20th century. I wasn't disappointed by the text. Spencer paints a good picture of who influenced whom, who was meeting with whom, where, and when. What struck me was how seriously these individuals took typography and design. They thought they could fundamentally change society, change governments. I guess governments thought so too, as some were imprisoned by the Nazis and one, H.M. Werkman, was executed.
