Love the simplicity and interpretations behind the art

It's always fun to see an artist go through different moods, allowing for a variation of their artwork to shine through. What better way to connect with your inner-child than to allow yourself to play with art? There are no inhibitions in this artwork, and that's admirable. A couple of my favorites are "Balloons", "Lizard Skin #2", and "Roads Diverging". Nicely done. Thank you for the reminder to release my inner critic and to just create art.

it was amazing. I've read a bit about the king and ...

Well, it was amazing. I've read a bit about the king and realized that Anna was not who she pretended to be. Having been raised hearing the music and the "legend", it was disappointing at first to realize exactly how much she deceived everyone. But... this author lays it out beautifully - showing exactly WHY Anna did what she did, and after reading it, well, I'm left with more admiration for her than before. I don't totally excuse her excesses in portaying the king as a despot - but neither do I exactly "forget" his habits and how women in the era were treated. He was not the monster she portrays, but yes.. his relationships with young girls and slaves would not be looked on "favourably" today, either.

Overall, I feel this was an even handed treatment of the subject, well researched and sensitive to both Thai and English histories.

HIGHLY recommended.

Unmasked but still admirable

It was interesting to read of the gap between fact and fiction in other writings about the famous Anna of The King and I, etc. But the author seemed so determined on a kind of character assassination of Anna Leonowens that he sometimes indulged in a fair bit of speculation of his own that was a bit tedious. I would have preferred him to present the facts as far as they could be ascertained and leave me to draw my own conclusions about her motivations. I did come to a slightly different perception of her and think that even though she appears to have been less than honest, she also did an admirable job of making the best of the hand that Fate dealt her.

Fascinating study of an enigmatic woman.

Anna Leonowens is well known to most American by means of the musical "The King and I," a revival of which has been running at Lincoln Center in New York for nearly a year, as well as the 1956 film. However, the real Anna is nothing like the woman in the movies. In her own books, she puffed up her influence with the king regarding his Westernizing of Siam, now Thailand. This is as thoroughly researched biography of an enigmatic woman who had to hide her inconvenient past to further the prospects of herself (as a wage earner after her husband died in 1859 when she was only 28, and those of the two of her four children who lived past infancy. I can say little because it would spoil the book. But this is a must read for anyone who is a fan of the musical or the various films and books on Anna, including her own.

Singapore Airlines has TWO very strong and successful company cultures.

The first is externally facing and everyone sees: "service excellence". The second is equally essential and embraced throughout the company: "cost-effectiveness".

No offense by posting this... In my opinion, the book provides a nice overview of Singapore Airlines. If you know little about financial analysis and the Airline's history, this book is for you. But if you do know both, it would be far more satisfying to peruse directly the annual reports of Singapore Airlines - that provides, relatively, much more information and insight. I read the reports before reading this book, and that perhaps explain my abstinence of giving this book a 5-star.

Required reading if you're on a tenure track.

Getting a doctorate or working toward tenure is an ambiguous meandering path that drives everyone NUTS. But Dr. James comes along and pulls back the curtain and says, here are the rules --follow them. One take away is when someone asks you to do something, consider "will this get me tenure?" if the answer is no, say no. Why didn't anyone else tell me that? Or that a tenure packet isn't for your current position, it's for the next position, either where you are or where you move to -- that's a game changer in my thinking.

About the Author
N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics and Chair of the Department of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. He has taught macroeconomics, microeconomics, statistics, and principles of economics. Professor Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals such as the AMERICAN ECONOMIC REVIEW, JOURNAL OF POLITICAL ECONOMY, and QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS and in more widely accessible forums including THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, and FORTUNE. In addition to his teaching, research, and writing, Professor Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers. A beautiful introduction

This was the textbook (in an earlier edition) that introduced me to economics back in high school. I decided to take the AP exam in the subject, even though my school offered no such course. Between this text and a test prep book, I was able to ace the exams; but more importantly, I was immersed in a subject so fascinating that I'm now studying it as a PhD student.

Throughout the book, Mankiw highlights differences in opinion between economists and "laymen," and to examine where those differences come from. For instance, rent ceilings are a popular policy that 93% of economists (as of a 1992 survey) say "reduce both the quantity and the quality of available housing." Mankiw explains why economists are so sure of this in compelling, intuitive terms, without demanding that students master calculus or statistical methods.

This book is the same as the newer version with a different model here and there but otherwise this edition and the 5th edition are the same. So save money by buying this one.

Wonderful book, teaching materials ok

This is a wonderful, wonderful book to introduce students to economics. The faculty materials are not quite as wonderful. We are on chapter 3 and one of my students found an error in a chapter on-line self quiz. I have found errors in the test bank and there are some ambiguous questions. The slides, however, match the high quality of the text.
Easily five stars except for the problems noted.
