About the Author
Richard Maltby is Professor of Screen Studies and Head of the School of Humanities at Flinders University. So, you think you've seen the movies

I purchased this book as part of a university course. I took the rather radical liberty of reading it right-through before the start of the course. It was not difficult. Packed full of insight into insight Maltby's text has proven to be a real source of enlightenment.

Nearly seven hundred pages make it quite clear that nothing, but nothing, is as it seems. The reader may have a strong political energy or none whatsoever but should realise that making movies works on many political levels. It may be unpalatable but it is often undeniable. A capitalist economy is a reality.

I thought genre was convenient sales language, now I understand how 'emotional landscapes' are used 'to construct ourselves socially.' I've never really been a fan of westerns but when I learn of exactly how they are operating I am most impressed.

Did you know that modern films make their money from rental and sell-through dvds and not the cinema release which only serves to recoup production costs and advertises the product? Well I did not. These are almost trivial asides when it comes to the breadth of Maltby's work. The movie (the word is explained) 'is a performance and not a text.' A construction of camera, editing and scenery. And its time.

'My principle aim,' concludes the author, 'has been to argue that Hollywood cinema must be understood through the specific historical conditions of its circulation as a commercial commodity.' And this is many years before James Cameron's Avatar. Highly recommended.

In Hollywood Cinema, Richard Maltby (Professor of Film Studies in the School of Cultural Studies at Sheffield Hallam University) draws upon his many years of expertise to provide a definitive account of the production of movies under the studio system from its inception down to the present time; an explanation of how the film industry works (including distribution and exhibition); an exploration of Hollywood's place in American popular culture and international mass culture; an analysis of the formal properties of Hollywood films (including space, time, performance and narrative); and a chronology of Hollywood Cinema. This broad-raging cultural exploration and historical survey is highly recommended, "reader friendly" volume for film buffs and film students, as well as an essential, core addition to academic and community library film studies collections.

Good all-round text on modern physics

This hefty textbook provides a solid introduction to the major fields of modern physics; i.e. physics in the 20th century. These topics are relativity, the structure of atoms, quantum mechanics, and nuclear physics. The text is appropriate for physics majors in the 3rd or 4th year of college, and is also a good book for students of materials science who are learning modern physics as an elective. The book is comparatively low on math and high in verbosity compared to other physics texts of the same subject matter; hence making it more accessible to non-physicists like engineers, chemists, etc... Each chapter comes complete with homework problems, and in this reviewer's experience, they are well done and error-free. I do not recommend this book for a one-semester class, it covers enough subject matter for 2-3 classes in modern physics - quantum mechanics. Overall, a good book to learn about modern physics and its ties with materials science.

Good Value

This is a junior or senior level text on essentially all of modern physics. Every topic is well explained and at a high level. It is short of a graduate text, but very good in terms of physics rather than mathematics. The main difference being ,I think, is a graduate text uses more advanced math (calculus of variations, bras and kets,group theory, etc) whereas this book only uses partial differential equations . However, the PDEs do suffice to accurately derive the results, and the student should certainly know both approaches.
Numerical solutions are given to about half of the chapters problems.
Additionally, the authors have went to the trouble of tracing the origin and development of the subjects, and explaining the motivations and difficulties that the pioneers faced, when possible.
It is true there is too much material to be covered in a single year...but I think this just adds to the value since it can be used as a reference as well as text.

Clear, detailed account of modern physics

This book does cover a lot of information that it seems overwhelming. However, this is only because the authors explain the concepts "all the way". For example, the discussion on wave packets includes the explanation of phase (an excellent diagram for learning how to visualize phase and group velocity) plus some details on complex analysis. Basically I find the descriptions of experiments, concepts and math very clear and detailed.
I would say that the verbosity of this book is excellent for people who like to get all the details clear. Readers with much faster brain processors, those who can't wait to learn more of QM or those who understands much of the fundamental physics and math behind QM might be bored by this book.

Cons: 1. Too verbose for some 2. rather heavy to carry around!!!

Surprisingly unexciting.

One would think with the mixture of cultures, a murder, and lots of lovely historical facts and references ' A Meiji Mystery' would be a memorable book. The author's prose is fluent and highly readable and she seems very knowledgeable about her subject. But I found this story surprisingly unexciting and the characters bland and uninteresting. It had the same feel as a film made for television- not quite up to scratch. Though I can't complain about the price, I feel this novel is just going to become lost , filed away in my cheap reads collection until I forget I even bought it.

About the Author
Clyde P. Stickney is the Signal Companies' Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College. He received his DBA from Florida State University and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Tuck School in 1977. He has also taught at business schools in Japan, Australia, Finland, and Germany. Prof. Stickney has authored and coauthored books on financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis.

Roman L. Weil, Ph.D., CPA, is the V. Duane Rath Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Chicago and has within recent years been Visiting Professor at the Haas School of the University of California, Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Harvard Law School; Princeton University; and New York University. He has designed and implemented continuing education programs for partners at two of the large accounting firms and for employees at several operating corporations. Dr. Weil has co-authored dozens of books. His lay articles have appeared in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in academic and professional journals, most recently on financial literacy for corporate governance and on the exposure of wine snobbery.

Two Stars Due to Lack of Functional Correlation to Reality

This book is titled as "Principles & Applications of..." which is loaded with information about principles and applications. Do not expect to gather functional information that would be anywhere useful conducting actual assessments whether in private practice or in a psychiatric hospital. Most of what I learned about assessment I learned at my practicum site and now my present job. Considerations for the authors for would to be add a second textbook. I would call it "Functional Application of Assessment in Reality Land", this textbook would address assessments with clients presenting with psychosis, malingering, substance abuse/dependence, personality disorders (especially borderline d/o e.g., I'm going to sue you, I 'm going to leave and kill myself), SI, HI with or without a plan AND so on.

Text books at the graduate level have to be detailed to the actual world. This book taught me about the measures, tests, and forms, but never talked about how to use those measure, tests, and forms.

Not a great read...

I found this book to be difficult to understand, and it didn't help me learn how to do assessments any better. I learned more from my professor and trial and error. The book was not a fun or engaging read. When a subject isn't fun, you should do more to engage the reader (I was taking this course because I HAD to). I understand that Statistics is not a fun subject, but this just put me to sleep. Many of my classmates felt the same way. I usually keep all of my books, but this is one that can be sold with a smile. Thank GOD that I don't have to take it again.
