About the Author
Elizabeth Castro is the original author of HTML for the World Wide Web: Visual QuickStart Guide. She is also author of Perl and CGI for the World Wide Web: Visual QuickStart Guide and XML for the World Wide Web: Visual QuickStart Guide–both best-sellers! Liz was the technical editor for Peachpit’s The Macintosh Bible, Fifth Edition, and she founded Pagina Uno, a publishing house in Barcelona, Spain.
Bruce Hyslop began developing for the Web in 1997 and focuses on interface technical architecture, development, usability, accessibility, and advocating best practices. He is the author of The HTML Pocket Guide (Peachpit Press, 2010), a thorough discussion and reference of all HTML elements (HTML5 and prior). Bruce also teaches a CSS course at UCLA Extension and occasionally speaks on matters regarding front-end development. Over the years, he has overseen front-end teams or been a developer for more than 150 projects, including those for ABC, BBC, Disney, Logitech, Microsoft, NBC Universal, Nokia, Target, Toyota, and Yahoo!, among others.
Bruce is an independent developer and consultant to agencies, start-ups, and others, previously having spent a decade in the digital agency world. Formerly, he was the senior director of the Interface Engineering Group (IEG) at Schematic, where he oversaw company-wide efforts to define and implement best practices regarding HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and accessibility wherever they may be applied: the browser, desktop, mobile devices, and emerging platforms.

Still not quite 6th Edition great, but great nonetheless!

I've been using the HTML Visual QuickStart Guide since 2nd Edition. I skipped the 7th edition because at the time I felt that the technologies added were too playground-ish to use in production for a web site that was not a web app. Also, I'm kind of loyal to Liz Castro and the updates from 6th Edition onward aren't hers and the style is definitely different in ways that felt out of place. What's changed is that as of this point in time, HTML 5 is no longer really a stubborn rejection of W3C's stagnant attempts at standardization. It IS a standard all its own now, with basically universal support in modern browsers, and it degrades properly, which cannot really be said of the now abandoned "future of the web" W3C was pushing for.
In short, HTML 5 won, W3C lost, the clunky explanation of the standards war and the push to XMLify the web is gone, and Liz has moved on to focus on the world of digital publishing with her excellent [ASIN:0321734688 EPub Straight to the Point] (which I highly recommend BTW). Bruce Hyslop is now at the helm of this title, and by this edition he's updated enough of the book at this point that it no longer feels like a messy patch…developers, you know what I mean. And Bruce is a highly competent and accomplished author in his own right who knows his material and presents it well. It's still the best book of its type on the market bar none, even if I would truly rate it only 4.75 stars instead of 5 if I could. ;)
And what type of book is it? Well, if you're just looking for a few tips on how to use some software to get a page on the web, this isn't your book. If you're looking for a guide to writing web apps, this isn't your book. If you haven't a clue what a web page is or how it works, this probably isn't your book. If you basically understand what a web page is, that it consists of content marked up with tags that have their own meaning irrespective of how they look on the screen, that there's a whole separate language for defining what those tags look like, and you're really just looking for a guide to show you how to use the various tags and markup to accomplish the goals you've set out for yourself… THIS IS YOUR BOOK.
It's your book if you intend to become a web developer as a regular thing, and it's your book if you have other duties but find yourself needing to include some web development/publishing amongst them. Its purpose is to get you comfortable with the code—the building blocks that make make up your pages. What you do with them from there is entirely up to you. From there, even if you ultimately decide to use some framework written in PHP, Ruby, or Python, or if you start designing your own framework… you'll have the tools to understand the HTML and CSS portion of it, and just enough of the Javascript to make those work. All of those other technologies… they're other books unto themselves.
Ultimately if you want to just do a thing on the web, you can find another way than reading this book. But if you want to understand what you're doing as you do it, this is the book to do it. And it has been for at least 17 years now.

I would not recommend the kindle version

I would not recommend the kindle version. When you purchase this book in paperback there is a code you can enter on the publishers site. When you enter the code you can download the ebook in 3 different formats for free. epub pdf and mobi are the versions you can download so you can take the ebook wherever you go! They do watermark the digital copies with a message stating 'from the library of '.

THE Go-To Guide For Beginners!

This book has been my go-to guide since I purchased the 5th Edition back in 2006. The 8th Edition, the current one, is the first one I've purchased the Kindle edition for and, I must say, it saves me clutter - while still keeping me up to date on the current material!
That being said, the original author, Elizabeth Castro, outlined everything step-by-step in previous editions and it has helped me get quickly up-to-speed with the code, the semantics of the code, and much more. Since Bruce Hyslop started writing with the Seventh Edition, however, the book has been much easier - and much clearer - to read; and the Eighth Edition is the absolute best edition yet of this book.
I highly recommend this book to ALL beginners - it will also help you get up to speed really quickly and help you to start creating pages quickly as well. I also recommend this to people like myself who are, ahem, rusty on their skills and needing to quickly catch up. It is safe to say that I'll be coding pages really soon again (becoming a father, along with other things in my life, can put you out of practice!).
