Great Strategies

This book gives a solid explanation of how we store our memories and why they sometimes fail to stick. I have always thought that I had a poor memory... now I know that it was not poor memory but poor encoding (getting it into my brain). While I got through college reasonably well using rote techniques I always felt that I lacked a deeper understanding of the information I was being taught.... NOW I know why....I wasn't making connections at all...
If you know you are intelligent but think you have a poor memory READ this book...You may just lack the proper encoding skills
She gives great advice of how to get things to skick in your brain....
I KNOW... I didn't even have to look at the book to remember the author's name.... gotta be a first

BEST memory book to date! 10 stars!

I have all the Harry Loryane books... Shame on me for turning to cheap memory tricks(mnemonics)to ace my studies(I was actually hoping this book was on mnemonics, imagine my disappointment when I found out that it wasn't, and later on my sheer exuberance after mastering true memory!). I had some pretty serious learning problems prior to reading this book...

Before, I could not even recall what happened in a paragraph that I had just read but now I can recall an entire book after just one reading! and most important of all understand its main contentions and all the little nuances. Memory is so fleeting, especially my own that any device to capture it is priceless!

Basically the key to long term transferal or understanding itself is connection: this is why mnemonics is so much more effective than rote rehearsal and the techniques in Memory Key so much more effective than mnemonics. You only understand something to the extent that you can relate it to knowledge that you already have. While mnemonics forms a superficial connection, the Memory key will teach you how to connect on deeper principles (categorizing, expertise, sensitive patterns, super clustering, priming, elaborations etc etc...)

The bottom line is this is the best book on memory improvement, the very first thing it teaches you that memory itself is plural...If you want to remember dates, where your lost glasses are, how to pitch a ball properly or like myself, what you read and study then buy this book, it's peppered with practical and applicable techniques and principles. I suggest reading the note-taking chapter first so that you can properly take notes on the book itself. Some books are meant to be tasted, others to be swallowed and MEMORY KEY to be chewed and digested.

Practical advice for using memory strategies

While most books on memorization usually describe memory techniques and strategies, Fiona McPherson's book takes the reader a step further. I have read over a dozen books in the area of memory, and I have discovered through experience the strengths and weaknesses of different memory techniques. In this book however, it teaches the reader how to USE memory strategies rather than just simply the techniques.
The book's approach can be aptly summarized in the phrase, "Smart selection is better than total recall." That is, effort put into understanding what you memorize, as well as why, is better and more effective for long-term recall. This is also true from my own experiences with memorization techniques. The book does not advocate placing everything into working memory. Instead, there is a balance between the cost of a memory technique (in time and effort) and using memory aids, such as creating lists. Memory recall is based not simply on techniques, but also in knowing how memory works as well as why specific strategies are effective. Like other memory books, this book also emphasizes frequent review of information. However unlike other books it provides practical tips on effective reviewing. Also the chapter on "Study Strategies" is an excellent chapter worth the price of the book. It breaks down the details for note-taking to a level that makes sense. It also describes creative ways to summarize information; these are in turn tremendous aids to understanding and ultimately, memorization of the material.
Some of the weaknesses in the book include terms that are not clearly defined for the reader at first (cues, codes) as well as a number of typographical errors (p. 42 - " traget" is target and "sues" is cues). Overall though, it is nice to pick up a book, read it and have my own experiences concerning memory validated in the book's advice. Fiona McPherson's book fills a nice niche for how to be aware of memory strategies and in the practical aspect of applying memory techniques.

In The Visible Word, Johanna Drucker shows how later art criticism has distorted our understanding of such works. She argues that Futurist, Dadaist, and Cubist artists emphasized materiality as the heart of their experimental approach to both visual and poetic forms of representation; by mid-century, however, the tenets of New Criticism and High Modernism had polarized the visual and the literary.

Drucker suggests a methodology closer to the actual practices of the early avant-garde artists, based on a rereading of their critical and theoretical writings. After reviewing theories of signification, the production of meaning, and materiality, she analyzes the work of four poets active in the typographic experimentation of the 1910s and 1920s: Ilia Zdanevich, Filippo Marinetti, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Tristan Tzara.

Few studies of avant-garde art and literature in the early twentieth century have acknowledged the degree to which typographic activity furthered debates about the very nature and function of the avant-garde. The Visible Word enriches our understanding of the processes of change in artistic production and reception in the twentieth century.

Visibility in Language and Art Exposed

In this fabulously demanding book, Drucker traces the development of how we see language, how we conceive of it on the page and canvas, and what the ramifications of that are in the realms of sound and meaning. This very densely written, scholarly text is at each page an explosion of citations and reflections which are the condensation of Drucker's dedicated research (I believe of 10+years!) and her exploration of the movements that define our time of the Word Made Flesh. She will either make you feel like you, too, have done all the work to get to these pages, or lead you off on your own hunt for more. Whichever it is, the journey is well worth the effort.

The Dune Walkers by Kara Sevda (Review by: [...])

Firstly, I want to say that I loved the photography that was sprinkled throughout the book. At the beginning of every chapter you were treated to a beautiful and original photo that tied in the events that would unfold throughout the next chapter. The photography was beautiful!

Okay, now onto the review! 'The Dune Walkers' is a new YA novel written by first-time author, Kara Sevda. The novel centers around the romance of Clara, a teenage girl, and Jack, a mysterious boy who lives down near the ocean. When the romance begins to take off so does the mystery. Clara is instantly attracted to Jack and their relationship develops quickly - almost too quickly. It is clear from the beginning that there is a mystery surrounding Jack and his friends. This mystery not only puts Clara on edge but it also puts the reader on edge as well. But in the end, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised on how this story played out. The mythology that Sevda delves into was unique and interesting. It was refreshing to read something new for a change!

The story was more a novella than a full length novel and the short chapters allow the reader to breeze through the story. In the end my only critique is that I wanted more. I know that this is the first in a series but I still wanted more out of the first book. There was so much build-up to the 'big reveal' behind the mystery surrounding Jack and his friends that there wasn't much after that. I wanted more details about how Clara came to accept Jack as he is, I wanted more details about Clara and Jack's time in the water and so on and so forth. I even wanted more of a build up on the relationship between Jack and Clara. I understand the attraction and undeniable pull that they felt towards each other but Clara is not part of their world to begin with so I felt there should be more questions and even a little bit of a resistance towards her feelings towards Jack.

Perfect romantic summer read

I want to live in this book! The setting was very lush and idyllic, the perfect backdrop for this story to take place in, and the photographs at the top of every chapter certainly help the reader visualize this cute little beach town. Clara, like many young women, has a lot to deal with, but her little outings with Jack seems to make them all disappear. Overall engaging, entertaining, and sweet!

Very refreshing!

I thouroughly enjoyed this series. This book in particular kept me completely entertained and I felt it was well written. I liked the strong female roles as well as the different mindsets of each character. I also enjoyed how the plots include real life experiences and honest emotions! Very refreshing. I don't want to lower the rating of this book because of my personal opinion on something in the book, so I'm rating it according to how good the book is in general.

I liked how the story tells more about Heather's past and how painful was for her and her mother when Jim left them and never called again.

For Heather it was very bad because she felt inferior to the other daughter because in her mind he not only left her, but now she knows he left her for another daughter they didn't even know that existed.

Heather had to go through Rebecca's things and see her life to discover what happened to her and some of these things hurt Heather so bad. Heather discovered a few things her mother was hiding from her from before Jim left them.

The reason why I didn’t fully enjoy this book was mostly because I was so angry with her father and his stupid wife that always treated Heather so bad. She was pure evil, and maybe afraid of Heather ruining what she thinks is a perfect life and no matter how regretful Heather’s father was feeling, I couldn’t feel sorry for him. He made his bad choices and he had a long time to regret and try to make up for it. Now that he needed Heather’s help is the only reason that he is seeing his wrong, so maybe I feel like: too little, too late. Must be because I feel like that to my own father that also cheated on my mom and now is choosing someone else over our family. I can’t see myself forgiving him anytime soon. So I was angry with everything that was happening to Heather being around a strange family with a father she doesn’t know anymore and she didn’t even had Barry around to help her cope with everything. Though I’m happy with her half siblings actually accept her well, I guess that kept her from feeling unwelcome. The book plot is great and I admire Heather for doing what she could to help Rebecca despite everything she was feeling while at it.

great read can easily bring up past memories of your own past!

Ok so dont read this if you have a past or recent situation that may be brought back with a vengeance once you read this book! This book is about a girl who lost everything when her father left and took a lot of blame for things she did not control. She could not have known that what she was and who she was could not have been a part of her hurt and pain from years past. She is innocent in many ways and yet no so naive to think that things could have been different even if she wanted them to be. When life trips you up and splats you onto the ground many times it is the child in us that stands up, dusts off and says ok I will be ok and I will be better for surviving this. That is exactly what this lil girl does and proves to everyone no matter how hard it is if you let it drag you all the way down it will but sometimes you have to be stronger than those around you!

This is an erudite yet remarkably engaging examination of the visual representation of slavery in Europe and North America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Wood (English, Sussex Univ., UK) includes a variety of materials, ranging from sophisticated oil paintings to crude woodcuts, based on their influence, popularity, and longevity. Many of the illustrations will be familiar, but Wood does not assume that they speak for themselves and examines them in a new light. He addresses the semiotic codes used to represent slavery and explains how they came to symbolize cultural memory. This study focuses on four areas: the middle passage, the iconography of slave escape, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and the torture and punishment of slaves. It does not include images of slave rebellion, day-to-day slave life, the slave trade itself, or emancipation. The images are both compelling and repulsive in their exploration of how memory is organized and visually depicted. An excellent bibliography further enhances this groundbreaking work. Why Slavery Matters.

Throughout this book, Wood stresses the fact that there is absolutely no way to truly apreciate the severity of slavery through recollection, but that it is important to try. It is important to understand just how widespread the phenomenon was, and how this tragedy in human history still resonates loudly within our psyches. One major point of the book is how populations who had been heavily involved in the slave trade, starting with the British and extending to the US North, began to sugar-coat their involvement by airing opinions of moral superiority over others. The best and most famous example being Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin", where Africans who were enslaved actually end up better off than their free African counterparts due to the fact that they become Christian. The slaves were redeemed through their brush with western cutlure (ie slavery). Other examples of visual evidence include the middle passage slave ship diagrams, runaway slave reward notices, inhuman iron helmets and shackles. Each area examined is brought to life by Wood's seemingly unending arsenal of background information and nontrivial ties to art history.

The book's real strength lies in how it can in fact bring the reality of slavery back, to confront western culture with it as something that still lingers, but with an almost Freudian degree of mass-denial. Slavery in the US existed longer than it hasn't, the economic ripple-effect alone should be self-evident. We are still in the wake of this dark era in our culture; Wood puts us on the therapist's couch and makes us remember, rather than suppress, these memories.

this book is incredibly interesting and engaging. Wood is insightful and it is not at all tedious to read. it was throught-provoking and i actually looked forward to reading it. plus, he's a really cool guy.
